Classification Minimum Requirements

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Job Description:

Manipulation of plant tissue culture samples: Cutting etiolated seedlings germinated in vitro into 1-2 cm explants. Dipping these explants into bacterial suspension and placing them into Petri dishes with nutrient medium. Transfer of explants from initial medium to other types of media. Harvesting of shoots that sprouted from explants treated with bacteria and placing them into Petri dishes with nutrient medium. 

Extraction of seeds from fruit. This task will be done by cutting the fruit open and taking the seeds from the flesh. Extracted seeds will be surface-sterilized in the 15% bleach solution and put into the tubes filled with germination medium. 

Visual inspection of shoots sprouting from explants treated with bacteria. Shoots sprouting from the seedlings stem segments will be observed under the blue light in the dark room. This will be done with the use of fluorescent microscope. 

Performing PCR reaction with plant tissue samples. This task will include mixing the ingredients of PCR reaction and placing them into the PCR machine. Then, starting the program for the PCR reaction. 

Entry of experimental data into Excel files and statistical analyses with the help of functions offered within the Excel software. The data will include number of explants used, number of sprouted shoots, and number of transgenic shoots. For record keeping, this employee will assist Principal Investigator in keeping track and delivering transgenic plants. 

All other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Normal work schedule: Three days a week from 8am to 5pm.

Expected Salary:

$15.80 per hour

Required Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization or a high school diploma and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred

Bachelor of Science in Biology or Chemistry
