Job Description:

Position Summary:

The Communications Specialist will play a pivotal role in enhancing the visibility and reputation of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. This position will be primarily responsible for creating engaging and informative written content for various platforms, including the department website, social media channels, newsletters, and magazines. The ideal candidate will have excellent marketing and communication skills and a curiosity about scientific and engineering fields.

Key Responsibilities:

  • 45% Content Creation:
    • Develop compelling content to convey faculty research, student experiences, staff highlights, alumni achievements, community highlights, and the department's impact on the world.
    • Translate complex scientific and engineering concepts into clear and engaging language for a general audience.
    • Write and edit content for the department website, social media platforms, newsletters, and magazines.
    • Ensure that all content is accurate, informative, and aligned with the department's brand and messaging.
  • 30% Content Management:
    • Manage content calendars and schedules.
    • Collaborate with alumni, faculty, staff, and students to gather information and stories.
    • Conduct interviews with faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
    • Assist with updating and maintaining the department's website and social media channels.
    • Assist with creation and distribution of seminar flyers.
  • 10% Media Relations:
    • Coordinate with the College regarding media outreach and press releases.
    • Respond to media inquiries and requests.
    • Build and maintain relationships with journalists and media outlets.
  • 10% Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
    • Represent the department at events and conferences.
  • 5% Event Support:
    • Provide communications support for department events, conferences, and workshops.
    • Assist with creating event materials, such as press releases, printing name tags, invitations.
    • Assist with event set up, coordination, and breakdown.
    • Assist with organizing and maintaining inventory of departmental materials and swag.

 

Expected Salary:

$15 per hour

Minimum Requirements:
  • Exceptional writing, editing, media and graphic artistry skills. Strong storytelling ability.
  • Strong proofreading skills.
  • Ability to work independently but well-coordinated with the marcom specialist as a team. 
  • Ability to represent the department in a professional and organized manner consistently.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Curiosity about scientific and engineering fields.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in higher education communications.
  • Experience with email marketing campaigns.
  • Experience with Adobe suite, Canva, social media postings, and interviewing.
  • Working towards degree or equivalent experience in journalism, communications, or a related field.
