KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Vision:  Develops, articulates, resources, and implements a strategic vision for the University of Florida’s health colleges, centers, and institutes that supports the university’s and UF Health’s strategic plans. Acts in all areas as a forward-thinking and transformational leader.

Research and Academic Excellence: Holds overall responsibility and authority for research and education in the health sciences (UF health educational programs include clinical education programs and undergraduate, graduate, and professional education). Fosters and supports excellence in basic, clinical, and translational research programs in the health colleges and their contributions across the university. Position Summary University of Florida

Operations: Leverages the educational and research strengths of UF health sciences in alignment with the clinical mission of UF Health. Ensures the university’s health colleges and related programs are operated in a financially-sound manner and that capital and other investments are efficiently utilized. Develops a structured process to optimize decision-making and outcomes. With the UF Health President/System CEO and the UF President, develops and administers financial models supporting the clinical, educational, and research missions of the health sciences.

Governance: While reporting to the President, leads collaboration with the health sciences’ college deans and other senior leaders. Provides leadership and direction for UF’s academic programs in the health sciences.

Culture: Develops and fosters an environment of respect, competence, transparency, innovation, and principle-driven management. Ensures that interdisciplinary collaborations enhancing educational and research programs in the health sciences are encouraged and supported. Support and champion collaboration across all of UF.

Advocacy: Cultivates strong, credible, and trusting relationships with alumni, donors, government leaders, and related external stakeholders in support of the educational, research, and clinical missions of UF and UF Health. Advocates for the initiatives of constituent units in the health sciences. Acts as an effective representative and spokesperson for the health sciences at the university. Plans and executes fundraising initiatives pertaining to the health sciences in support of college and university activities.

DESIRED OUTCOMES

Growth: Oversee successful expansion of the educational and basic, translational, and clinical research enterprises of the health sciences at the university in alignment with UF and UF Health goals. Ensure growth is coordinated with inter-university initiatives and contributes to revenue-enhancing strategies, e.g., through new educational program offerings, strategic recruitment of outstanding research groups, and integration of research opportunities into clinical care and population health.

Research: Improve quality and quantity of basic, translational, clinical, and population-based health sciences research and expand research activity to increase the overall impact of UF’s research enterprise. Foster collaborative, programmatic research programs that encompass health science and non-health science colleges, institutes, and centers.

Education: Continue development and implementation of an innovative and interprofessional educational strategy. Support the health colleges’ education and training initiatives.

UF Health Alignment: Promote the growth, reputation, and impact of the health colleges and the clinical enterprise by enhancing education and research, including the development of innovative educational strategies and development of novel prevention and therapeutic programs.

 

Expected Salary:

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and ten years of appropriate experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area of specialization and twelve years of appropriate experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
IDEAL EXPERIENCE
 
Executive Leadership in Complex Academic Environments: Substantial and progressive leadership experience within the academic health sciences as dean, institute director, or other broadly scaled leadership role, with responsibility for strategy development and implementation, educational and research program development, and financial management. Holding an equivalent role in industry, the government, or a not-for-profit organization is potentially acceptable when combined with a prior faculty position or leadership role in an academic health center.
 
Research and Education Leadership: Personal success in establishing and expanding an institutional research program in the health sciences, including strategic development and implementation in collaboration with scholars and practitioners outside the candidate’s own field; success developing and leading multidisciplinary educational programs in collaboration with other university or institutional leaders.
 
Operational Acumen: Demonstrated managerial abilities and enthusiasm for the administrative and financial responsibilities of the position, with understanding of the financial pressures facing academic health science centers and health care delivery organizations and the principles of mission-based budgeting and funds flow.
 
External Representation:  Demonstrated success as the public face of an institution and in philanthropic pursuits.
 
Personal Scholarship: Strong preference for a physician-scientist or clinician-scientist with a strong record of scholarship, including a record of substantial, extramural peer-reviewed funding, and national/international recognition. Academic credentials sufficient to engender respect within the University of Florida and UF Health and support appointment as a tenured full professor.
 
CRITICAL LEADERSHIP CAPABILITIES
 
Acting Strategically: The SVPHA will partner with constituent deans and UF/UF Health senior leaders to develop, refine, and execute a strategy that optimizes UF’s scholarship in the health sciences and contributions to the clinical mission by:
  • Clearly articulating the future direction and ideal culture of the organization while leading by example and challenging established practices, as necessary.
  • Identifying and prioritizing critical factors in making strategic decisions affecting the university’s health colleges and programs.
  • Discovering, creating, or expanding synergies between colleges in the health sciences.
  • Pursuing revenue-enhancing opportunities through new or expanded education/research offerings.
