The position is located within the Weed Science Program at the Gulf Coast Research and Education Center in Balm, Florida. The focus of the Weed Science Program is the development of precision pest management technologies and integrated weed management programs for small fruit crops, vegetables, and ornamentals. This includes but is not limited to the use of herbicides, fumigants, crop rotation, and biological knowledge. Extension services catering to the needs of the growers, industry, and public interests are also an important component of the Weed Science Program. The employee will focus on development of precision pest management technologies for specialty crops. This will include the collection and modification of photos necessary for the training of convolutional neural networks (CNN), training CNN’s to detect and identify pests using an array of sensors, the integration of sensors, deep learning or other technologies as identified into precision sprayers to detect, identify, and treat pests where they occur within agricultural ecosystems. This may include the use of GPS and GIS to create maps of where the pests occur and the use of these maps to apply prescription-based management techniques in subsequent years. The precision technology development will initially focus on crop canopies and weeds but may expand to include pests and diseases. The employee will also be responsible for the preparation and publication of results in peer reviewed journals as well as presentations at Scientific Conferences. It is anticipated that the employee will play a leadership role in the coordination and development of the precision technology within the Weed Science Laboratory at GCREC. This will include the coordination and oversight of field trials related to precision application technology as well as coordinating and working with students and staff on precision agricultural research.
