Job Description:

UF Information Technology (UFIT) is seeking a professional-level Regulated Research Computing Facilitator to join Research Computing, a unit within UFIT.  The successful applicant will be hired at an intermediate or advanced level, depending on their experience.

UF Information Technology (UFIT) enables teaching, learning, research, and service on campus and across the region with state-of-the-art enterprise IT systems, including SEC and SUS universities, and the opportunity to teach using HiPerGator.

Employment with UFIT provides an excellent opportunity to work with other dedicated employees focused on understanding and interpreting the technological needs of the University of Florida’s innovative and inspirational community.

An increasing number of projects involve handling regulated data, which means laws, regulations, and contractual requirements cover the data and the activities to handle and process the data. This means that the computer systems and networks must meet stringent compliance requirements. These requirements consist of technical and administrative controls, making working in the secure environment harder than outside such environments. This position assists the faculty, students, staff and researchers in maximizing the efficiency and efficacy of the workflows while meeting the compliance requirements. The successful applicant will be part of a dynamic team to support researchers engaged in fascinating projects that each have the potential to change society and the world.

Some key responsibilities and characteristics of this position are:

  • All work in the secure environment is done in secure virtual machines running Linux or Windows operating systems that are completely locked down with no access to the Internet. This is a significant hurdle for modern software developers. There are ways to build a productive software development and testing environment inside the secure system, but this requires extra time and effort that researchers do not have. This position will have the priority assignment of creating and maintaining a productive environment.
  • Responsible for automating the maintenance of the VM images. Because demands in a research environment are constantly changing, these processes will continuously need to be changed.
  • Collaborate with the researchers to figure out the best workflows to get their work done within the constraints imposed by the controls of the compliance framework.
  • Monitor system activities, react to alerts, and generate regular reports as part of the daily operation of the secure system to meet compliance.
