Job Description:

The Veterinary Hospital Supervisor will be an integral member of the team, working with the Progressive Care manager to develop the nursing team to promote patient advocacy and provide high-quality patient care for hospitalized patients. Primary job duties include providing positive leadership for the overnight team and ongoing mentoring of the team members. This position is a working supervisor position with the expectation that the candidate will maintain oversight of the ward while working alongside the team performing patient care as needed. Professionalism and flexibility are important aspects in this pivotal role as an individual must communicate effectively and demonstrate critical thinking strategies. The individual will actively participate in the screening and selection of new team members and provide onboarding and training for the staff alongside their manager. They will also provide regular feedback to the nursing staff through performance evaluations and mentoring.


This is a full-time, benefitted position and is considered essential personnel. Education verification, background checks, and health assessments are required.

Supervision of Staff


This position must be able to promote a positive culture and attitude among staff and develop a team that is willing to work with various services and a wide variety of personalities. The individual must be able to promote teamwork within the hospital to meet the needs of our patients and to effectively support team members. The individual should strive to build collaborative relationships among staff, students, and clients by creating a culture of dialogue and inviting thoughts and ideas to be discussed. The individual must be able to effectively communicate with their team clear expectations and hold people accountable for their actions while maintaining a Just Culture by being committed to a fair and consistent approach to managing risk and accountability. The individual must acknowledge the accomplishments of all members of the patient care team seek to provide guidance, and provide and receive feedback for improved work performance.

Examples of work include but are not limited to the following:

• Ensure staff meet and maintain minimum standards for technical knowledge and patient care through regular training, assessments, and continuing education
• Serves as a subject-matter expert and resource to Technicians and Assistants regarding daily operations, patient care, and skill development.
• Serves as a role model for staff by consistently demonstrating and promoting positive work habits
• Identifies conflicts in the workplace and seeks assistance in resolution to create collaborative working relationships.
• Communicate regularly with team members to ensure consistent understanding of new ideas, changes in protocol, policies, and impending changes.

• Implements process improvement initiatives.
• Document work-related behaviors to be used for performance appraisals, superior accomplishment awards, performance improvement plans, or disciplinary action
• Provide ongoing feedback. Meets with each staff member regularly for 1:1 meetings and writes biannual performance reviews
• Create, and maintain, the overnight PCW schedule for technicians; ensuring adequate coverage for all shifts, including holidays, minimizing overtime, and making effective use of any time to optimize efficiency.
• Validate and approve employees’ time in PeopleSoft
• Approves leave requests while ensuring service is adequately staffed
• Actively participate in the screening and selection of new team members and provide onboarding and training for the staff.
• Collaborate with dept. manager to schedule and plan monthly staff meetings and continuing education
• Ensure patient treatments are completed accurately and promptly.
• Ensure all end-of-shift responsibilities are completed every shift.

Training and Development

Create a safe and welcoming learning environment that promotes further education and development of staff and students by fostering positivity, respect, and trust. Encourage staff to be proactive in their thinking and develop leadership skills among the team. Ensure staff are cross-trained to assist in all areas needed for the functionality of the hospital including client service duties.

• Assist the manager with implementing and improving the standardized training modules for staff by
o Reviewing and expanding the technical skill competencies
o Designing assessment testing for staff to measure and benchmark technical skills and knowledge and to determine areas that need more education and training.
o Writing Standard Operating Procedures for the use of new equipment and performing procedures of PCW/isolation areas
o Communicating performance expectations to staff
• Assist students, interns, residents, staff, and faculty in learning various techniques, protocols, and procedures
• Collaborate with specialized services to ensure staff have appropriate training in specific areas
• Assists the Infectious Control Officer and t with Isolation policies and protocol implementation
• Assist the PCW/ECC managers with ID inc investigations and promoting patient safety and high-quality care.
• Assist employees with patient safety and quality rounds reports


Patient Care and Service Support

Promote among your staff patient safety and quality care by ensuring each patient is treated as if it were their cherished pet. Strive to be an effective and empathetic communicator with our clients, with the intent to inspire their trust in our team’s ability to provide compassionate, high-quality veterinary care for their beloved family members. Promote the Patient Care Team concept by respectfully communicating with all members of the team who are involved with the patient and recognizing the value of a cohesive team.
Encourage a positive work environment by being coolheaded/even-keeled during any situation and maintaining a positive attitude. Foster a welcoming environment by addressing people warmly and cordially. Seek out information in regards to patient care versus having information relayed to you. Ensure hospital cleanliness is kept up. The overall aesthetics of the area is a direct reflection of the high-quality care we provide so the areas must be kept in pristine condition while creating a safe and accident-free environment.

Examples of work include, but are not limited to the following:

• General nursing skills such as venipuncture, catheter placement, patient restraint, treatments, medication administration, sample collection, and pain assessment
• Abide by appropriate hospital SOPS for infection control when handling patients, providing interventions/treatments, and processing/performing diagnostic testing.
• Monitoring of anesthetic recovery and post-procedure analgesia
• Run diagnostics on Point of Care machines and notify clinicians of the results.
• Review patients’ treatment sheets and ensure all charges for all PCW patients have been entered
• Support the room coordinator and aid staff in using all team resources to accommodate e patient care and non-patient care responsibilities
• Model appropriate stress management in a tumultuous environment
• Develop professional relationships with the CSR team to aid in providing outstanding customer service to all PCW clients
Oversee Hospital Cleanliness by assisting staff with:
• Maintaining and keeping all areas clean and organized
• Properly disinfecting and cleaning equipment
• Assist with processing laundry, as needed, and providing patients with clean dry bedding
• Ensure cages and runs including drains, grates, and doors are cleaned every day and as needed
• Sweep and mop floors daily
• Empty trash cans and laundry daily
• Contact the appropriate person with work orders for repairs as needed and maintain records
• Properly maintain all pharmaceutical waste from the shift

Additional responsibilities


• Attend biweekly ECC management meetings
• Attend monthly ECC and PCW staff meetings
• Attend PCW continuing education lectures
• Attend mandatory service CE such as biannual CPR training, etc.
• Meet biweekly with PCW manager
• Provide shift updates weekly to the PCW/ECC managers

SUPERVISION
Receives general instructions and directions. Detailed and precise instruction is outlined in service protocols and procedures. Direction is outcome-based. Meets regularly with the PCW manager to review performance, procedures, policies, and goals.
Provides general instruction and review to hospital staff. May provide periodic instructions and review of student workers, volunteers, and OPS technicians. Instructions are both written and oral.

NORMAL WORK SCHEDULE
• The supervisor is expected to primarily work Wednesday- to Saturday 6 pm-4 am, however, the schedule may be altered to ensure adequate staffing on the shifts, to attend required meetings, and to meet with staff as needed.
• The schedule will vary depending on the needs of the area. Staff are scheduled to work 3-13-hour shifts: 6 pm to 7 am.
• This position will require working alternate shifts and some holidays.

Expected Salary:

$19.15-$31.13/hr

Required qualifications Associate degree and two years of relevant experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute an equivalent rate for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited veterinary technology program and/or certified veterinary technician or eligible to sit for the VTNE.
• 3-5 year’s experience in veterinary medicine, well-versed in medical/veterinary terminology and essential veterinary technician technical skills
• 2 years or more supervisory experience in veterinary medicine
• Critical thinking skills and the ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude when working in a tumultuous environment
• Professional written and oral communication skills
