Classification Title:

Assistant Scientist

Classification Minimum Requirements:

Highest degree possible in field or equivalent professional experience; Evidence of pertinent experience for the position and qualities for the academic unit.

Job Description:

The Assistant Scientist will contribute to a multidisciplinary program investigating the mechanisms and prevention of long-term and intergenerational neurocognitive effects associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI), surgery, and general anesthesia. The role involves designing and conducting experiments in young adult animal models; analyzing neurocognitive, neuroinflammatory, and brain–gut–microbiome (BGM) outcomes; and developing innovative pharmacotherapeutic strategies to reduce perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PND).

The Assistant Scientist is a Non-Tenure accruing position.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting advanced preclinical research on TBI-, anesthesia-, and surgery-related neurocognitive outcomes across generations.

  • Performing a wide range of experimental methods, data analyses, and translational research activities.

  • Leading or contributing to systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and manuscripts in areas with limited existing clinical evidence.

  • Investigating the role of the BGM axis in PND and identifying mechanistic targets for intervention.

  • Evaluating novel therapeutic approaches, including FDA-approved agents, for their potential to prevent neurocognitive decline following injury and anesthesia exposure.

  • Collaborating with internal and international research partners to advance scientific discovery.

  • Contributing to the mentoring and training of students and junior researchers.

Successful candidates will demonstrate strong scientific knowledge, creativity in experimental design, and the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, translational research environment.
