Job Description:

The Florida Museum of Natural History is seeking a part-time Federal Work Study (FWS) student, in the Environmental Archaeology program, to assist the Collection Manager with collection curation.

The successful candidate will assist with tasks associated with record keeping, data input, curation and organization of our archaeobotanical comparative collections. The Environmental Archaeology Program collections include modern comparative and archaeological specimens of zoological (animals), botanical (plants), and pedological (soils) materials.

Students will gain valuable experience in the field of natural history museum collections management and care. Prior experience and knowledge of botanical taxonomy or biology is preferred but not required and all necessary training and supervision will be provided. Applicants must be FWS eligible.

 

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities

Curation of Modern Comparative Archaeobotanical Collections

  • Supporting curation upgrades of botanical specimens (seeds and woods), including assistance with inventory and curation, tracking physical specimen locations, printing and placing catalogued specimen tags and imaging.
  • Synthesize, verify, and contribute to data related to collections and/or individual specimens.
  • Will at times include lifting and moving heavy items.

This position is part time at 10 hours per week.  

Expected Salary:

$14 /hr

Minimum Requirements:
  • Collection assistants should have strong written and oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, experience working within teams, and a commitment to the success of this program.
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study.
Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and Adobe Acrobat is preferred.
