Job Description: |
Field Responsibility. Conduct field experiments related to forage cultivar improvement, including, but not limited to: 1) field preparation (pre-establishment); 2) design, establishment and planting; 3) maintenance (fertilization, irrigation, pesticide application, and mowing); 4) data collection (plant sampling and processing); and, 5) assist in data analysis of agronomic field experiments. Accurate record keeping will be essential. Position will perform proper operation, calibration and maintenance of vehicles and agricultural equipment such as tractor, tillage equipment, planters and pesticide applicators. Position will maintain and inventory all field research equipment and supplies. Supervise and coordinate OPS workers needed to for completion of responsibilities.
Laboratory and Greenhouse Responsibility. Maintain and manage laboratory compliance with UF Environmental Health and Safety regulations. Supervise laboratory operations needed for the breeding program. Supervise OPS labor hired for laboratory assistance. Ordering and maintaining laboratory and greenhouse supplies. Conduct greenhouse experiments related to forage cultivar improvement. Maintain greenhouse for proper experiment operation (clean and organized). Conduct and supervise the propagation of plants to be used in field experiments.
Research and Administrative. Conduct literature and protocol research as needed for the research in the forage improvement program. Fill out paperwork related to purchases for materials/equipment for research. Maintain UF Environmental Health and Safety paperwork and lab personnel safety documentation. Request and evaluate quotes for purchases as needed.
Assist students, OPS, postdocs and visiting scientist in standard methods and safety procedures for research in field, greenhouse and laboratory.
Miscellaneous duties as deemed necessary by supervisor.

Expected Salary: |
$19.16 / hour commensurate with education and experience

Required Qualifications: |
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.
Valid Florida driver’s license required, a valid pesticide license or ability to obtain one shortly after hired.

Preferred: |
Bachelor’s degree in plant breeding, agronomy, or a related plant science field, or an appropriate area of specialization and one year of appropriate experience in agricultural production and/or plant breeding.
A strong background in production agriculture and experience in plant breeding or operating and maintaining common agricultural equipment. Organization skills demonstrating the ability to design, implement, and report on multiple projects at once.
