Job Description: |
The incumbent will serve as a senior biological scientist position, supporting the labs of Drs. Gentry, Sun, and Vander Kooi, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The incumbent must have skills in management of mouse colonies and project management across multiple grants, as well as knowledge of IACUC protocols and IBC submission. This position will work independently and collaboratively in a team to support multiple ongoing projects.
Project Management:
- Oversee research projects requiring method development, and delivery of results to customers using the Mass Spectrometry facility.
- Review and approve CE and GC/MS data generated by other lab members.
- Manage technical staff involved in mass spectrometry services.
- Extract, collect MS data, analyze, review, and evaluate research findings of customer samples according to established facility standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Scientific Writing and Dissemination
- Participate in scientific conferences to learn about new MS developments.
- Lead or contribute the writing of manuscripts and data presentations.
- Disseminate of research results and developments at internal and external scientific meetings and in peer-reviewed scientific publications.
- Disseminate research results and methodology, specifically the methods sections for client publications or grant applications.
Creation and Maintenance of SOPs
- Design, write, implement, and manage CE and GC/MS SOPs, protocols, and research methods; resolve conceptual problems by troubleshooting and researching.
- Develop, troubleshoot, and implement new sample extraction and analysis methods by CE and GC/MS.
- Oversee the implementation of new methods by coordinating with other lab members in the establishment of said new methods.
- Develop and apply ad-hoc bioinformatics solutions for the analysis and visualization of complex metabolomics datasets.

Expected Salary: |
$60,000 - $68,000, commensurate with experience and education. |
Required Qualifications: |
Bachelor's degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master's degree in biology or a related field with five year of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.

Preferred: |
The ideal candidate:
- is a highly organized multitasker who pays attention to detail and values research integrity
- has 5 years of research experience in mass-spectrometry, including at least 3 years of direct experience in GC-MS equipment, technologies, and analysis
- has demonstrated computer skills for analysis of metabolomics data.
- has previous experience in processing and analyzing large datasets (i.e. metabolomics data, NGS data, genome annotation or developing analysis pipelines)
- has familiarity with databases and statistical computing programs, such as R and Matlab.
- has experience in the field of cancer research, metabolism, or immunology.
- is able to work independently yet be a team player.
