Job Description:

Interdisciplinary Center for Biotechnology Research (ICBR) is the University of Florida’s central life science research center, focused on providing UF researchers with access to cutting-edge scientific instrumentation, services, and expertise.

The Systems Admin/Programmer II provides intermediate IT support and is responsible for maintaining ICBR’s computational infrastructure and services. The position assists with the management of new and existing server hardware and services that provide a variety of complex software systems, including but not limited to applications related to the control of Biotech instrumentation from vendors such as Illumina, PacBio and Partek. The position will use and develop expertise with tools and technologies including but not limited to Atlassian Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket, Postgres, MySQL, SQLite, Samba, Active Directory, Powershell, RHEL, Ansible and NFS services for scientific laboratory cores. The position will write and maintain existing web applications that utilize technologies such as Linux, Python, Django, Postgres, Shibboleth, and JavaScript frameworks such as React. Customer service, both within ICBR and with our external customers, is key to ICBR’s success. This position requires adopting and promoting a positive, professional, respectful, and customer-centric attitude.


System Security and Administration:

  • Assist with responsibility for the physical server hardware and the services they provide to ICBR research and administrative functions
  • Responsible for the implementation, management, and support of ICBR’s infrastructure, including a variety of hardware and software systems, including web, application, and database servers.
  • Carry out procedures to ensure that all systems and services meet UF privacy and security standards by analyzing, identifying, and diagnosing issues and symptoms using a variety of tools, processes, and procedures.
  • Perform system administration on ICBR’s server and scientific computing infrastructure and services.
  • Manage the evaluation and improvement of security configurations for operating systems, applications, and networking services.
  • Deploy and maintain services such as Hypervisors, File storage and sharing, system update and patching services, backup and imaging of servers, and monitoring services.
  • Responsible for the shared support of Tier 2 requests requiring occasional after-hours and weekend rotation.
  • Shared contact responsibility for REES environmental monitoring system.
  • Assume a shared responsibility to keep the monitoring system functioning, including hardware probes and the server system running the monitoring and alerting software.
  • Responsible for follow-up on alerts that are generated by the REES system to ensure that steps are taken to prevent the loss of biological sample material.
  • Participates in conducting and reviewing risk assessments as needed with the deployment of new applications and services.

Application Development, Deployment, and Testing: 

  • Perform software development throughout the application life cycle; designing, coding, testing, implementing, maintaining, and supporting the software application.
  • Translate business requirements into functional specifications and manage application development changes.
  • Facilitate collaboration between ICBR and UF IT security to address any identified security risks.
  • Evaluate code to ensure that it is valid, is properly structured, secure, meets industry standards, and is compatible with browsers, devices, and operating systems.

Maintain Documentation: 

  • Write and review ICBR documentation and security risk assessments related to software and infrastructure.
  • Create and maintain IT documentation and knowledgebase articles for future use by ICBR and CI staff.
  • Maintain and grow IT knowledge through reading, self-study, online, and face-to-face learning activities.
  • Lead in the development and preservation of technical documentation (designs, specifications, processes, workflows) and communications.

User Education and Outreach:

  • Conducts information security training and awareness initiatives for ICBR staff.
  • Provides cross-training in application development and systems administration for other members of the CI core team.

  • Ability to generate technical documentation is required.
  • Ability to follow standard operating procedures and policies is a must.

Expected Salary:

$61,000 - $63,000, commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Associate’s degree and two years of relevant experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or an equivalent degree, along with demonstrable experience in high-performance computing, virtualization, cloud computing, research computing, and supporting scientific instrumentation, is desirable. Additionally, experience supporting storage, networking, and computational resources is beneficial.
