Instrumental Analysis • Measure soil pH using a calibrated pH meter following laboratory protocols. • Perform chemical analyses using multiple analytical instruments, including: o Colorimeter for rapid nutrient and parameter testing. o Discrete Analyzer for multi-parameter soil solution analysis. o Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) Spectrometer for elemental analysis of soil extracts. • Operate, calibrate, and maintain analytical instruments in compliance with QC/QA standards. • Document results in laboratory records and ensure accuracy before submission.
Reagent Preparation and Soil Extractions • Prepare chemical reagents and extraction solutions according to standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines. • Conduct soil extractions using established methods • Filter extracts to remove particulates prior to analytical testing. • Label and store extracts appropriately to ensure sample integrity.
Data Management and Reporting • Enter analytical data into laboratory databases with high attention to accuracy and consistency. • Monitor QC/QA performance by reviewing calibration data, blanks, duplicates, and control samples. • Generate fertilizer recommendations based on analytical results, following laboratory guidelines. • Compile data into tables, charts, and graphs for client reports, research summaries, and presentations. • Utilize software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access to manage and process laboratory data.
Sample Preparation • Receive, log, and organize soil samples according to laboratory protocols. • Sort samples based on project requirements and testing schedules. • Dry samples in designated drying ovens to remove moisture prior to analysis. • Use mechanical and manual methods to sieve samples to specified particle size fractions. • Sift and scoop prepared samples into labeled containers for extractions and analysis. • Maintain cleanliness and prevent cross-contamination between samples during preparation.
Laboratory Maintenance and General Support • Wash glassware to ensure contamination-free analysis. • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory workspace in compliance with safety regulations. • Assist in routine maintenance of laboratory equipment. • Support other laboratory functions and projects assigned by the Laboratory Manager.
