Job Description: |
This part-time (0.5 FTE) position is assigned to the Horticultural Sciences Department to support the needs of faculty, staff, and students to accomplish ongoing goals of Teaching and in-person experiential learning. This position supports field, greenhouse, and orchard operations for several programs. Responsibilities include installation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems in field, greenhouse, and orchards. Maintenance upkeep and fertilizer application of crops teaching and research areas. Care, scouting and propagation of annual and perennial crops. Operation and repair of various irrigation systems. Assisting students and volunteers as needed.
Duties include:
- Care and management of food crops.
- Weed control in orchards, groves, greenhouses, and vegetable field plots.
- Upkeep of demonstration crops including tree crops, perennial crops and annual vegetables.
- Fertilizer application to trees, berries and vegetables, including fertigation and hydroponic systems.
- Maintain teaching facility and greenhouses in tidy and operational order.
- Irrigation operation and repair in Research Grove, Student Farm and Teaching Orchard.
- Operate three irrigation wells as needed. Monitor trees, crops and soil for irrigation scheduling.
- Make repairs to drip systems, impact sprinklers and microjet sprayers.
- Utilize Web-based irrigation controllers for operation and diagnostics.
- Support teaching objectives of faculty in teaching garden and teaching orchard including cultivation, planting, seeding and bed-making.
- Assist with the setup and breakdown of lecture materials in student garden building as needed by teaching faculty and lecturers.
- Ensure that classroom facilities are secured in the Student Farm building.
- Maintain security of electronic teaching equipment.
- Periodically check and perform minor repairs on agricultural infrastructure including greenhouses, shade houses, high tunnels, equipment storage building, seed storage room, fertilizer storage, walk-in coolers, and produce wash station.
- Inform Farm Manager of major issues if discovered.
- Report problems to farm manger and place work orders when needed.
- Other Departmental needs as assigned by the Farm Manager.

- Ability to participate or assist with hands-on teaching and field days.
- Ability to communicate learning objectives and program mission.
- Knowledge of crops and cropping systems including pest and disease management.
- Knowledge and ability to identify and troubleshoot problems or equipment failures.
- Ability to pay attention to details.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with others.
Ability coordinate work activity with students and interns to complete projects and maintain horticultural plots.
