Job Description: |
This is a Biological Scientist I position focusing on crop insect pest management and ecology at the University of Florida's Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Everglades Research and Education Center in Belle Glade, FL. The duties assigned to this position are:
Work under the supervision of project leader toward the successful completion of project goals designed to (1) evaluate pest management strategies through research projects and (2) demonstrate these strategies to growers and cooperators through extension projects. Maintain and complete lab, greenhouse, and field experiments. Collect data and conduct preliminary analysis of results. Assist with state-wide pheromone trapping program for Mexican rice borer. Interact with growers and UF/IFAS personnel to successfully conduct joint research and extension projects.
Enter and maintain project data and other records. Write preliminary reports of research findings, and present results in posters and oral reports. Communicate with state agencies, extension agents and grower clientele regarding research results.
Maintain project facilities (including pesticide storage area), equipment, materials, insect collections, and plant and insect colonies in a safe, organized, and functional manner. Maintain inventory for equipment, agricultural and laboratory chemicals, and records, including safety records and SDS. Order necessary materials for research or maintenance of facilities or goals upon approval by project leader.
Receive new or supplemental training in safety, technology, experimental and statistical techniques and apply this knowledge in project service. Search electronic and print information important for advancing project goals. |
Expected Salary: |
$50,000.00 annual

Required Qualifications: |
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.
|
Preferred: |
Prior experience in agronomic row or vegetable crops, including sugarcane.
Prior experience in application of agrochemicals and conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Must have valid driver’s license and pesticide applicator license.
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related field.
