Job Description:

Performs husbandry duties (cage changing, receipt of animals, daily health monitoring and reporting, room sanitization, facility inspections), leads area assigned, coordinates work tasks and quality assurance testing with other ACS sections and others as necessary.  Process special service requests from researchers and other area managers and ensures equipment delivered is returned timely. Ensures waste is routed to appropriate waste streams.

Assist in management of assigned facility/area. Ensures facility schedules are implemented and completed, manages staff performing husbandry procedures and staff operating cage wash equipment following strict guidelines from USDA, UF EH&S and ACS SOP’s. Responsible for all phases of  quality control monitoring and processing of equipment. Ensures housing and environmental compliance with the “NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals”.  Maintains sanitation and work schedules for assigned facilities ensuring AAALAC standards, federal/state laws/regulations, and University policies for research animal care are maintained. Responsible for maintaining, room logs, water quality logs, sanitation records, etc.  Provides assistance to both research and ACS staff.  Assists with regulatory compliance and quality control process and provides ACS management with input for updating standard operating procedures and practices.

Conducts interviews and provides input for hiring applicants for permanent/ temporary employment.  Ongoing mentoring of staff and ensuring that they are proficient in assigned duties. Ensures animal care technicians are trained and are proficient in working with approved housing systems in animal holding rooms, autoclaves, tunnel washers, rack washers, and other equipment within the cage wash facility and specialized equipment in support rooms. Responsible for assigned technician’s performance appraisals.   Provide guidance and support in creating a fully well rounded employee. 

Will be required to keep up to date on SOP’s in Policy Manger. Will be responsible for ensuring that staff is up to date on SOP’s in Policy Manger. Will ensure time entered by assigned staff is correct before approving. Ensure that Leave, Overtime and Weekend/Holiday Change Requests are approved in a timely manner.

Expected Salary:

$52,200/annual

Minimum Requirements:

A high school degree or equivalent and two years of relevant experience as a lead technician.  Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prefer BS degree or higher with at least 4 years’ experience with research animal care at a research institution or other appropriate environment. Needs excellent interpersonal skills and ability to motivate staff. Must have strong customer service skills to provide a fulfilling experience with research partners, staff and peers. AALAS LATG certification at time of hire.
