Job Description:

The University of Florida College of Medicine is seeking an Associate Director for the Artificial Intelligence for Quality Improvement (AI/QI) Program under the Quality and Patient Safety Initiative (QPSi). The Associate Director will apply their high-level technical and organizational expertise to lead complex strategic initiatives that utilize AI and advanced analytical tools to improve quality of care and patient safety. This position will report directly to the Executive Director of the QPSi.

The position is an excellent opportunity for someone who would like to combine their advanced technical knowledge and operational expertise to improve patient care outcomes and contribute to the translation and communication of these complex issues to various audiences.

About This Role:

Program Management and Operations

  • Lead strategic operational planning and implementation for the QPSi AI/QI Program.
  • Manage and track timelines, resources, and priorities for AI/QI initiatives using the QPSi’s project management system to ensure alignment and transparency of efforts.
  • Facilitate stakeholder engagement including working closely with clinical teams to effectively manage and communicate AI/QI initiatives and advance innovative AI-enhanced quality improvement efforts.
  • Enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of the AI/QI program through its integration into quality and patient safety initiatives across the QPSi including contributing to the development of educational resources for the QPSi Academy.
  • Manage human resources for the AI/QI Program, including overseeing recruitments and evaluations. Promote best practices in human resources to enhance employee engagement, professional development, collaboration and a culture of continuous learning. 

Strategic Planning and Implementation

  • In collaboration with QPSi leadership, oversee implementation of the strategic plan for the AI/QI program to align goals, processes and resource allocation with the QPSi strategy.
  • Develop and manage an evaluation framework to assess the implementation of the strategic plan and the performance of the AI/QI program including leading the development, assessment, and reporting of metrics. 
  • Assist the Executive Director of the QPSi in developing, evaluating and implementing the QPSi strategic plan, including identifying areas for collaboration and synergy across QPSi programs.
  • Monitor trends in health care delivery and medical sciences research and industry to inform the trajectory of the AI/QI Program and initiatives to drive transformation that advance value in health care. 
  • Facilitate the creation and execution of strategic partnerships beyond the QPSi, fostering collaborative opportunities that enhance AI/QI program initiatives.
  • Engage and support stakeholders and lead and participate in workgroups, focus groups, and committees to review, refine, and design program initiatives, assembling appropriate program plans and teamwork assignments to reflect the needs of these stakeholders.

Project Development & Management

  • Direct the development of new and expanding projects related to AI, quality improvement, and patient safety.
  • Assume the role of project team member, technical resource, and process facilitator, as needed, to provide high-level expertise and mentorship to the team and facilitate project progress.
  • Lead coordination of QPSi’s contributions to a governance m odel for operationalizing AI-enhanced solutions in accordance with CRISP-ML(Q) principles or related frameworks. Design scalable processes and computational systems to support growing and evolving needs.
  • Work with subject matter experts in patient care and healthcare operations to ensure appropriate context for AI model development.
  • Contribute to creating AI and data science courses for the QPSi Academy and assist in defining and implementing the framework to evaluate utilization and impact of courses.

Communications and Outreach

  • Foster relationships and collaborations with QPSi stakeholders to ensure that all members of cross-functional teams work together to accomplish program objectives and are fully informed of progress and activity relevant to the initiative.
  • Provide project status, summary recommendations, and final impact evaluations, as appropriate, according to project timelines. 
  • Prepare presentation materials, analysis, and reports at the appropriate level of detail for the audience (Board of Directors, UF Health leadership, college leadership, program design reviews, operational readiness reviews, etc.).
  • Assist leadership in defining communications direction for the QPSi, participating in the strategic planning process and decision-making.
  • Create, implement, and oversee outreach programs to promote initiatives under the QPSi.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience.

Preferred:
  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Mathematics, Biostatistics or a related field.
  • Experience with various AI methods including deep learning and graphs learning and an understanding of CRISP-ML(Q) framework.
  • More than five years of experience in IT, computer engineering, or systems engineering preferably in a health system environment.
  • Familiarity with Electronic Health Records data including unstructured data such as text, images, waveforms, and ‘-omics’ data.
  • Experience with managing a portfolio of biomedical/clinical informatics projects.
  • Familiarity with healthcare pathways and operations.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Demonstrated experience working with various people at all levels of a health system organization.
  • Knowledge of project management, Six Sigma or other operational improvement methodologies.
  • Leadership training or demonstrated strong leadership skills.
  • Familiarity with Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership (OMOP) common data model.
  • Demonstrated experience translating strategic goals into operational plan.
  • Demonstrated experience collaborating with physicians, clinical staff, and senior leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to present to key stakeholders and/or leadership.
  • Must be self-motivated and comfortable working independently, as a team leader and member.
  • High level of interpersonal skill, written and oral communication necessary to interface with various
    levels of management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills with the ability to influence and inspire across functional
    lines required.
  • Must demonstrate relevant experience in motivating people who may or may not be direct reports to
    work as a team in harmony with the goals of the project and the organization.
