Job Description:

The de Hemptinne Lab at the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases is seeking a motivated Medical Scientist II to join our team to support research focused on deep brain stimulation (DBS) for treating cerebellar ataxia in a novel clinical trial. The successful candidate will work closely with an interdisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and clinicians to develop cutting-edge neuromodulation techniques.

The Medical Scientist will perform work central to support new projects in the lab, collecting data, and developing data analysis pipelines to support research projects, including quality assurance analysis, statistical analysis, visualization, and interpretation. This team member will interface with several data modalities, including intracranial neurophysiology, wearable sensor data, medical imaging, behavioral task data, and clinical data. The scientist will assist with data collection, data analysis, help with study design, and contribute to developing technology to facilitate the data collection and analysis. The individual will be expected to collaborate effectively with members of the de Hemptinne Lab and other teams to facilitate program activities and resolve technical problems.

The successful candidate must have strong technical skills with a background in data science/engineering in medical research and excellent written and oral communication skills. Creativity and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

About This Role 

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Collecting, cleaning, storing, organizing, and maintaining data for advanced analysis
  • Digital signal processing of biological signals (cardiac, brain, muscular, and others)
  • Statistical analysis of research data
  • Data quality assurance protocols
  • Medical image (MRI, DWI, CT) processing using open-source programs such as 3D Slicer, ANTs, or similar
  • Designing and implementing behavioral task protocols
  • Designing and implementing techniques for objective symptom quantification
  • Testing wearable devices for research protocols (Apple Watch, Fit Bit, or similar)
  • Develop data analysis pipelines
  • Data management and storage of human subjects’ research data in compliance with regulatory policy
  • Supporting manuscript writing, grant writing, and presentation preparation

Expected Salary:

60,000 - 65,000 annually

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field and three (3) years of experience in the field or in a related area

Master’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field and one (1) year of experience in the field or in a related area

Doctor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field; no experience required

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must possess:

  • Degree in Computer Science/ Science in Engineering/Engineering
  • Experience with Python and MATLAB (other programming languages like C/C++ a bonus)
  • Experience with code management in public and private repositories (GitHub or similar)
  • Experience with human subjects’ research using medical devices
  • Experience with neural data analysis from EEG, ECoG, and deep brain electrodes
  • Experience with signal processing algorithms
  • Experience with artificial intelligence/machine learning
