Job Description:

Training and Operational Support

The incumbent’s primary function is to provide engineering/laboratory support services to students, faculty, and staff while adhering to facility safety and procedural policy. This includes guiding students in the design process, providing design feedback (as needed/requested) to students on cost effective and practical physical prototyping of engineered systems, training, and supervising students on the safe operation of laboratory equipment, suggesting materials and parts for fabrication of student projects, and curating a library of design guides, parts catalogs, and vendor contacts to aid students in design and fabrication activities.

The incumbent will also train, instruct, and mentor undergraduate students and staff. They will engage in classroom discussion, student design team meetings, workshops, and other various design review events to provide timely and constructive feedback in a way which anticipates student needs. The incumbent will assist in the training of teaching assistants, staff, and faculty. They are expected to contribute to evaluation of student work from an engineering perspective. The incumbent will be assigned responsibility for monitoring the progress of students and working with faculty to suggest intervention or additional resources to maximize student potential.

The incumbent may be assigned to perform laboratory tasks and data analysis drawn from the current literature in the relevant technologies in service of students, faculty, and/or research projects and publications thereof.

System Design, Evaluation, Operation, Testing, & Maintenance

The incumbent will research, design, and make recommendations for computer and integrated laboratory hardware systems required for all labs in cooperation and conjunction with the professors and staff. They will integrate backup and redundancy mechanisms into their designs and recommendations. The incumbent will remain current on current literature, emerging techniques, tools, programs, and instrumentation in and related to computer engineering. They will research industry software and hardware equipment alternatives to determine requirements and compatibility to upgrade and improve existing programs.

The incumbent additionally will evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and test laboratory computer systems, laboratory instruments, and digital and analog test equipment using appropriate technical manuals and/or vendor technical support. The incumbent will maintain all measurement and power equipment for all labs.  Equipment includes, but is not limited to computers, networking devices, oscilloscopes, function generators, power supplies, logic state analyzers, spectrum analyzers, EEPROM programmers, data acquisition hardware, control systems, and power and motor control systems. The incumbent will design and implement improvements to maintain efficient operations and a positive learning environment in the laboratory.

Asset / Inventory Management

The incumbent will serve as the administrator for laboratory asset tracking policies and application of UF decals and other tracking mechanisms, including where applicable and appropriate the loan to and retrieval of items from students, staff, and/or faculty and tracking of sensitive hardware supplied to teams and/or individuals to avoid theft or loss. The incumbent will track and make recommendations for the purchase of consumable supplies and equipment to maintain a well-stocked laboratory for student projects. The incumbent will work closely with vendors on competitive pricing for requests. The incumbent will analyze costs, assist in the review and update of facility budgets, and use collected facility, cost, and usage data to review the laboratory equipment, condition, and utilization. Based on this review, they will recommend new equipment and renovations as appropriate to maintain the laboratory. The incumbent will also complete the annual asset survey, monitor asset information such as location and ownership, and update the asset record accordingly.

Lab Logistics

The incumbent will work with laboratory faculty and staff to maintain and update meeting spaces and offices for classes and meetings for faculty, students, and staff. This includes participation in the hiring and supervision of student employees as appropriate. The position is responsible for checking these spaces regularly, enforcing food and drink policies, maintaining furniture and technology infrastructure, ensuring facilities are secure, and coordinating with facilities personnel to clean and conduct repairs. The security of lab access includes door code maintenance, security camera management / review, locker security, and inventory upkeep. The incumbent will also prepare written reports for supervisor(s) upon request.

Expected Salary: Level I: $57,000-$65,000; Level II: $65,000-$75,000; commensurate with education and experience
Required Qualifications:

Preferred:

•    A Master’s degree in an appropriate area and relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in any area and six years of experience.

•    Excellent computer engineering background and ability to supervise and train others on the safe operation and process control of computer engineering equipment including precision measuring devices, electronics testing and assembly tools, and rapid prototyping systems.

•    Ability to perform, with minimal supervision, the design of computer systems and determination of upgrade requirements for computer systems.

•    Ability, skill, & knowledge to maintain computer systems using test instruments.

•    Ability to troubleshoot circuits in a wide range of microprocessor applications.

•    Ability to effectively interface with faculty, students, and staff in a responsive, courteous, and professional manner.
