Job Description:

The University of Florida College of Medicine seeks an Assistant Dean for Medical Education Scholarship and Faculty Development. The Assistant Dean for Medical Education Scholarship and Faculty Development will lead the development and implementation of a structured infrastructure to support medical education research and scholarship within the College of Medicine. This senior leadership role is responsible for fostering a culture of educational research, mentoring faculty in scholarly activities, securing funding for research initiatives, and advancing faculty development in medical education research methodologies.

This position oversees the Office of Medical Education Research, Scholarship, and Faculty Development and directly supervises the Assistant Director of Research Administration who provides consultation and support for faculty, trainee, and student research efforts. The assistant dean will play a pivotal role in building capacity for faculty engagement in medical education scholarship, designing faculty development programs, and ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and accreditation requirements. Open to current University of Florida, College of Medicine faculty.

About This Role

Strategic Leadership and Infrastructure Development:

  • Establish and oversee the Office of Medical Education Research, Scholarship, and Faculty Development, ensuring operational efficiency, sustainability, and alignment with the institution’s educational mission.
  • Develop policies, processes, and resources to support medical education research, including grant writing assistance, research design support, and mentorship programs.
  • Lead strategic planning efforts for medical education scholarship, aligning priorities with institutional goals and accreditation standards.
  • Advocate for the importance of medical education scholarship at the local, national, and international levels, enhancing the institution’s visibility in this domain.

Medical Education Research and Scholarship:

  • Lead and support research efforts in medical education, ensuring faculty and students receive guidance on study design, methodology, data analysis, and dissemination.
  • Promote a collaborative research environment, fostering interdisciplinary projects and partnerships with other institutions and professional organizations.
  • Assist faculty, trainees, and students in developing high-impact research projects, presenting at national conferences, and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Secure external funding through grant applications and institutional partnerships to sustain educational research initiatives. 
  • Establish metrics to assess the impact and quality of medical education research activities within the institution.

Faculty Development:

  • Oversee and manage faculty development programs, that enhance medical education research skills, including training in qualitative and quantitative methodologies, research ethics, and manuscript writing.
  • Collaborate with department chairs and faculty leadership to integrate scholarly productivity expectations into faculty roles and promotion criteria.
  • Design and deliver workshops, seminars, and individualized mentorship programs to support faculty at all career stages in engaging with medical education research.

Collaboration and Institutional Alignment:

  • Work closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education, department chairs, and other academic leaders to align faculty development efforts with institutional goals and priorities.
  • Collaborate closely with the Assistant Dean for Assessment Evaluation, and Scholarship, the Assistant Dean for Continuous Educational Quality Improvement and Accreditation, the Director of the Free Center, and the Assistant Dean/Director for Medical Education Research and Scholarship/Jacksonville to ensure continuity of efforts across multiple domains for faculty and students. 
  • Foster a collaborative environment among medical education researchers, faculty developers, and academic leaders to share best practices, resources, and educational innovations.

This is a 0.30 FTE administrative appointment.

Required Qualifications:

Candidates must be at Assistant Professor, Associate, or Professor rank appointed in the UF College of Medicine, have a M.D., D.O., or relevant terminal degree, with a focus on medical education, educational leadership, or a related field.

Preferred
  • Significant experience in medical education, including teaching and research in medical pedagogy.
  • Proven record of scholarship in medical education, with experience in grant writing and publishing in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Experience in faculty development, mentoring, and providing professional development programming.
  • Strong background in curriculum development and assessment in a medical education context.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse faculty members and stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Previous experience in academic administration or leadership in medical education.
