Job Description: |
Join Our Team as a Biological Scientist II in the Department of Neurology!
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented biomedical scientist to support the research initiatives of Dr. Matthew LaVoie in the Department of Neurology at the University of Florida. This position offers the opportunity to engage in cutting-edge neuroscience research, performing advanced laboratory experiments, statistical analyses, and general laboratory support.
As a Biological Scientist II, you will independently conduct a variety of biological experiments, including SDS-PAGE, western blotting, and advanced microscopy techniques. You will also manage tissue cultures, including stem cell differentiation, and support projects requiring animal husbandry, stereotaxic surgery, and other laboratory methodologies. In addition to hands-on lab work, you will play a critical role in data recording, analysis, and presentation, contributing to the preparation of manuscripts and ongoing scientific discoveries.
About this Role
Independently performs a variety of tests and biological experiments following established methodologies. Tests may include SDS-PAGE, western blotting and various modes of advanced microscopy. Prepares and maintains tissue cultures including stem cells and differentiation of those into neurons, astrocytes, and other terminal cell fates. Basic animal husbandry and maintenance, and/or stereotaxic surgery may also be required.
Records data, summarizes, and analyzes using basic statistics. Records data into lab notebooks and electronic archives as directed by the PI. These forms of data will include images captured under various modes of microscopy, microplate-based assays, and physical film and/or images of Western blots. Pooled data will be stored in a data management software (Graphed Prism, or similar) where summative data and routine statistical analysis (t-test, ANOVA, two-way ANOVA, etc.) can be calculated. Routinely presentations data and interpretations during lab meetings and assists in manuscript preparation.
Maintenance of laboratory equipment, reagent preparation, proper disposal of chemicals/biological material, cleaning glassware, overall general maintenance. Maintains supplies in accordance with departmental procedures (organizes and oversees ordering of general lab supplies).
About the LaVoie Lab
The overall goal of the LaVoie lab is to elucidate the earliest molecular events responsible for adult onset neurodegenerative diseases. We approach these devastating disorders from both the perspective that specific inherited gene mutations linked to familial forms can provide valuable insight, as well as maintaining a focus on aspects of the far more common sporadic forms. The LaVoie lab employs a diverse array of state-of-the-art tools to accomplish these goals including a series of novel knockin animal models, iPSC-based neuronal and glial cultures, and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing.
