Job Description:

We are seeking a highly organized and experienced Research Coordinator to lead the Everglades Snail Kite Program. This role involves supervising field technicians, managing research data, and coordinating with partner organizations to support conservation efforts. The ideal candidate should be passionate about avian research and have a strong background in fieldwork, data analysis, and program management.

This position requires a self-motivated individual capable of handling many organizational, logistical, and personnel challenges. The field research region (Central and South Florida) is a challenging place to work, with high temperatures and humidity. Safety is a critical issue in the field research. The coordination of research and providing results to stakeholders requires working with agencies and stakeholders with diverse and sometimes competing interest.

Key Responsibilities:

Field Supervision and Training

  • Hire, train, and supervise technicians for field research and monitoring of snail kite demography.
  • Develop and enforce monitoring protocols, ensuring proper use of equipment (boats, vehicles, banding tools).
  • Drive to various training and research collection sites to oversee field activities.

Data Management and Analysis

  • Organize, analyze, and manage data from field research.
  • Write and maintain computer programs for demographic analyses.
  • Conduct data proofing and prepare meta-data summaries.

Reporting and Grant Writing

  • Oversee the preparation of annual, progress, and final reports for funding agencies.
  • Supervise and contribute to grant proposals to secure additional funding for research and monitoring.

Research Coordination

  • Collaborate with scientists from institutions like the University of West Florida, Avian Research and Conservation Institute, and U.S. Cooperative Wildlife Research Unit.
  • Share findings with researchers, agencies, and stakeholders through presentations, meetings, and conference calls.

Field Research and Support

  • Periodically participate in field data collection on breeding biology, foraging, and movement of kites.
  • Provide assistance to graduate students with their research projects.

Equipment and Permit Management

  • Manage and maintain field equipment, supplies, and research permits.
  • Oversee financial reporting and procurement of necessary supplies.
Expected Salary:

$52-$55K, commensurate with education and training

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Preference to applicants with at least two years of experience leading field research on vertebrates living in wetland ecosystems.

Preference be given to applicants that have experience with airboats, boat safety training, and some mechanical aptitude for boats and other equipment, wilderness health training, using Geographic Information Systems, database management, working with state and federal agencies, and ecological data analyses.
