Job Description: |
The Department of Microbiology and Cell Science seeks candidates to serve as support staff in the teaching laboratory. This is a part time, renewable position with an open start date.
Responsibilities of this position include:
- Preparing and maintaining live cultures on various growth media to be used in classroom experiments.
- Preparing various growth media for classroom use.
- Preparing and aliquotting reagents and buffers to be used in classroom experiments.
- Organizing and preparing materials for classroom use on a set timetable.
- General maintenance and cleaning of lab space and equipment.
- Monitoring and restocking of classroom supplies.
- Monitoring stockroom supply levels and reporting ordering needs to the lab manager.
- Proper preparation and disposal of non-hazardous biological waste and biohazardous waste.
The Teaching Laboratory is a dynamic environment that serves the teaching needs of over 1000 UF students each academic term. Our customers are the instructors, teaching teams, and students associated with microbiology lab courses, including MCB2000L, MCB3020L, MCB3023L, MCB4034L, and MCB4271L. We serve classes taught in-person in the departmental teaching labs as well as remote learners who need the hands-on training our labs provide.

Expected Salary: |
$13.00 per hour
|
Minimum Requirements: |
- At least part-time enrollment as a UF student in good standing with the University. Students must maintain a minimum 2.0 grade point average.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Good time management skills.
- Strong algebra skills
|
Preferred Qualifications: |
- Microbiology or other life science major who has successfully completed one or more of the classes served by the Teaching Laboratory.
- Previous experience as a teaching assistant for one or more of the courses served by the Teaching Laboratory – or - experience as a research assistant in an established research laboratory.
Preference will be given to students eligible for Federal Work Study support.
