Job Description:

 The Acquisitions Intern assists the Acquisitions department of the State University System Press (University Press of Florida) and works on book projects at all stages of the acquisitions process, and performs other clerical duties as assigned.

Excellent written communication skills and organizational abilities are essential. This position is ideal for students who enjoy reading and discussing books and scholarship, who want to gain experience in the publishing business, and who are interested in exploring book publishing as a career. The Acquisitions Intern will gain practical and professional knowledge about the publishing industry.

Department Support:

  • Creating and maintaining records in the press database;
  • Assisting with the evaluation and preparation of projects for the press’s faculty editorial boards, including drafting editorial comments and author and peer reviewer bios;
  • Evaluating images submitted for transmittal to Editorial, Design, and Production;
  • Preparing manuscripts for peer review;
  • Creating book castoffs to estimate length of publications;
  • Sending letters to newly published authors;

Project Development:

  • Reviewing initial project submissions for prospective publication and routing to appropriate editor or declining as necessary;
  • Reading and evaluating proposals for projects under consideration;
  • Composing project summaries for advance contract circulation;
  • Drafting revision and resubmit letters summarizing peer reviews;
  • Attending department meetings to discuss projects under consideration;

Research:

  • Researching prospective peer reviewers for projects under consideration;
  • Reviewing conference programs and identifying prospective projects and authors of interest;
  • Researching course adoption potential for prospective book projects;
  • Conducting other research projects as needed.
Expected Salary:

 $13.00   Working 12-15 hours per week

Minimum Requirements:

 High school diploma

Preferred Qualifications:

 Appropriate college coursework or relevant experience in a professional setting and/or publishing, especially c   copyediting and proofreading.

Computer literacy, including working knowledge of Windows and Microsoft Office Suite.

 Experience with Adobe Photoshop.
