Job Description:

This position is in the Surgical Oncology service at the College of Veterinary Medicine department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences. The main responsibilities are to aid in the execution of clinical and laboratory research endeavors led by Dr. Elizabeth Maxwell and other Oncology faculty.

-SUPPORT OF PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATORS: projects involving both client-owned and research animals and cadavers. Assist in the conduct of research projects in areas relating to oncology and pain management techniques. Typical assignments for the research laboratory include the following:
• Assist in directing, coordinating, and organizing laboratory activities
• The incumbent will be trained to perform central line placements, nociception testing, blood sampling and other clinical techniques. The incumbent should have training and experience in low-stress handling and physical restraint of cats and dogs as well as sample collection (including venipuncture, cystocentesis, etc.), catheterization, calculating fluid rates and other techniques.
• Assist in managing laboratory teams and monitoring the quality of a team’s work.
• Assist with instructing students in methods or procedures
• Assist in coordinating the collection of samples
• Collect, process and manage storage of biological samples (blood, urine, feces and tissues).
• Assist in reviewing, approving, or interpreting results
• Aid in acquisition of research animals and cadaveric specimens
• Management and organization of cadaveric specimens and live animal colonies
• Assist in drafting IACUC applications and grant proposals.
• Collect and /or dissect specimens
• Laboratory animal care and oversight: The incumbent will consistently monitor the health and status of research cats and dogs, provide routine care as dictated by research projects, and coordinate and supervise support personnel to help with animals and projects. The incumbent acts as a liaison between the PIs and Animal Care Services and IACUC. Performs activities relating to veterinary care as directed, including but not limited to: triage, assessment, treatment, sample collection, documentation, anesthesia and surgery support. Performs animal health treatments, ensuring clinical health records are complete and current. Assists with surgical and post-surgical monitoring and care assistance procedures. Processes incoming animals and assists in routine health maintenance and enrichment programs.

-CLINICAL RESEARCH DUTIES:
• Schedule and coordinate appointments for clinical trial patients
• Assist PIs in collecting history from owners, performing physical exams and obtaining samples (blood, urine, feces and others).
• Samples processing and banking
• Assist PIs in special procedures (endoscopy, surgery, etc.)

-ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES:
• Research laboratory: maintaining inventory, purchasing supplies, complying with EH&S requirements, routine maintenance of equipment and laboratory order and cleanliness, and preparing written protocols and supply lists.
• UF procedures and policies: Complete training on an annual basis to insure the safe and proper functioning of the laboratory.
• Supervisory: directly supervise volunteers, students, residents and/or fellows.
• Computer: use Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Design Suite, statistical software (SPSS, GraphPad Prism), and reference managing software (Endnote).

-OTHER DUTIES: as assigned.

Expected Salary:

$20.59

Minimum Requirements:

Degree from an accredited veterinary technology program; or an associate's degree and three years of experience as a veterinary technician, including work with research animals.

Preferred Qualifications:

Laboratory experience in handling biological samples
• Animal handling experience with dogs and cats
• Experience using standard laboratory equipment
• Time management, organization skills, the ability to multi-task and work collaboratively
• Experience with IACUC, CRCC, EH&S, and GLP policies
• Interested in participating in grant writing, study proposals, and manuscript preparation
• Experience in low-stress handling and physical restraint of cats and dogs as well as sample collection (including venipuncture, cystocentesis, etc.), catheterization
• Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point, Adobe Design Suite, statistical software (SPSS, GraphPad Prism), and reference managing software (Endnote)
