Job Description:

The Opportunity:

The University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications seeks a Director of Distance Education/Training.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Distance Education, the Director of Distance Education/Training directs long-range strategic planning, operations, and administrative activities for the instructional design team of UF CJC Online. The primary duty is to manage instructional design professionals and OPS support staff who design and develop graduate-level and professional development courses. The Director will work with the instructional design team, subject matter experts (SMEs), and instructors to ensure courses demonstrate Adult Learning Principles, Best Practices in Online Education, and Learner Engagement that meets/exceeds Quality Matters standards.

Some duties of this position include:

  • Directs the instructional design remote team of UF CJC’s Distance Education department.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of all online graduate-level courses, plus the delivery of professional development courses.
  • Directs internal and external quality course reviews through Quality Matters.
  • Manages the faculty Course Change Request System.
  • Manages the UF Academic Approval process for UF CJC Online.
  • Manages certificate assessment reporting.
  • Advises senior leadership about new initiatives and projects.
  • Directs the efforts of and supervises departmental staff; sets performance standards and accountability.
  • Analyzes and establishes policies and programs.
  • Formulates and administers the instructional design annual operating and related promotional budgets; procures agreements for materials or services.
  • Ensures all distance education programs, activities, and courses comply with university, state, and federal regulations.
  • Develops and maintains partnerships throughout the university.
  • Oversees communications, promotions, public relations, and the UF CJC Online Style Guide.
  • Serves on various university and departmental committees and represents the department at various state and national conferences.
  • Responsible for maintaining inclusive working environment and community culture.
  • Manages and uses industry-leading authoring tools to develop and maintain online courses. Tools include, but are not limited to, Canvas with CidiLabs/Design Tools, Camtasia, Articulate Storyline, Rise and Reach 360, Harmonize, Adobe Suite, MS Office, and Zoom.
  • Provides project leadership for multiple learning projects and programs.
  • Interviews SMEs and conducts research related to curriculum.  
  • Coaches SMEs and instructional designers through course development and recertification processes.
  • Evaluates course effectiveness and reviews course evaluations for continuous course design improvements.
  • Tracks the status of all projects in the Monday.com software program.
  • Facilitates and/or presents department information and training to faculty, instructors, and team members.
  • Supports instructor development and provides excellent customer service as needed.

Expected Salary:

$98,000 - $102,000

Minimum Requirements:

Master's degree in an appropriate area and six years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in an appropriate area and eight years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Education.
  • Minimum of six years of appropriate experience in instructional design, including skills related to adult learning principles and online learning best practices through Quality Matters.
  • Certified by Quality Matters as a peer reviewer, master reviewer, and course review manager.
  • M.B.A. and MEd
  • Seven+ years of instructional design work experience, including skills related to adult learning principles and online learning best practices through Quality Matters.
  • Certified by Quality Matters as a peer reviewer, master reviewer, program reviewer, course review manager, and facilitator for the APPQMR.
