Job Description: |
Initiates, maintains, and harvests human tissue cell cultures (blood, marrow, solid tissues, etc.), for
use in all sections of the cytogenetics laboratory. Performs any necessary pre-treatment of samples to facilitate testing (e.g. pre-treatment of FFPE slides for FISH, CD138 enrichment of plasma cells, etc.) Harvests and makes slides of chromosome interphase cell preparations for chromosome banding and/or fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) testing. Performs all pre-analytic steps for FISH, DNA and/or RNA assays. Loads, runs, and unloads the ASI scanner for both FISH and G-band analysis.
Conducts conventional chromosomal analyses and performs karyotyping; this duty involves the accurate identification of chromosomes and description of structural and/or numerical chromosome abnormalities, and the proper recording of this data manually or digitally. Performs analysis of FISH and/or chromosomal microarray studies and/or DNA/RNA-based assays.
Performs gender verification of documentation prior to reporting by the director. Acts as a reviewer for written reports. Interprets results and transcribes draft reports for the director. Occasionally provides verbal preliminary results to ordering providers.
Makes media/solutions, maintains the laboratory and its equipment; including, computers and scanning systems. Ensures that required activities of CAP accreditation are being met. Participates in proficiency testing, CEU activities, validations and quality initiatives.

Preferred Qualifications: |
Bachelor's degree in medical technology, clinical laboratory, chemical, physical or biological; OR Associate degree in chemical, physical or biological science or medical laboratory or equivalent education and training (refer to 42CFR493.1489(b) for details on required courses and training); OR Individuals performing high complexity testing on or before April 24, 1995 with a high school diploma or equivalent with documented training may continue to perform testing only on those tests for which training was documented prior.
