Job Description:

This is a full-time, term-limited, grant-funded position reporting to the Director of the Office of Academic Support (OAS). The Academic Program Specialist (APS) will carry out duties consistent with the mission, vision, and goals of the Department of Education, the UF Student Support Services (SSS) program, OAS, and UF.

  • Provide general academic advising/counseling and learning support using a case management approach.
  • Coordinate programs and events, input and maintain UFSSS database and records, recruitment and orientation, monitor and track students’ academic progress, and supervise student staffers.
  • Assist in integrating the TRIO project with existing programs, services, and initiatives within OAS.
  • Provide direct support services to program participants as outlined by the TRIO-Student Support Services Grant.
  • Assist in reviewing student applications, determining program eligibility, enrolling students in the UFSSS Program, and providing student-centered, proactive interventions to promote academic achievement and enrollment retention.
  • Assist in data collection and analysis for grant reporting purposes.
  • Implement and evaluate program services, interpret and implement program policies, design and develop academic programs and events, and academically advise a caseload of approximately 160 participants.
  • Communicate with academic advisors campus-wide, administer academic intervention plans, and coordinate graduate school and professional school visits.
  • Assist with recruitment, orientation, and intake of student participants, process applications, and maintain up-to-date records on program participants.
  • Create, develop, and disseminate College and Career FAQ Sheets for program participants.
  • Provide semester academic progress updates on all program participants, assist with the completion of the US DOE Annual Performance Report, and maintain a yearly calendar of programs, events, and activities.
  • Develop and present formal workshops to help all students improve their critical thinking, comprehension, test-taking skills, study skills, and academic and personal development.
  • Provide information and advice to current and prospective students, parents, faculty, and others in areas such as academic programs, admissions, financial aid, and career planning.
  • Participate in the writing and editing of program proposals, research grants, publications, and other program activities.
  • Teach, prepare presentations, workshops, and other activities as assigned by the Director.
Expected Salary:

Actual salary will be determined based on individual qualifications and experience. The university offers an excellent benefits package.

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and two years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree with two years of experience in higher education administration, counseling, or a relevant area of study.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline with three years of relevant experience working with a targeted student population (first-generation and low-income).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, work efficiently with good organizational skills, and multitask in a dynamic work environment.
  • Experience working with diverse students, knowledge of student academic and professional development, workshop design, and proficient use of technology and software to accomplish tasks efficiently.
  • Interpersonal skills to generate effective networks across a multifaceted university community, both internal and external.
  • Strong commitment to student development and working with TRIO SSS programs.
  • One year of professional experience working within academic support services with working knowledge of program assessment and evaluation, strategic planning, and program development.
  • Experience working with federally funded TRIO Programs.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
