Plastic Free Cities Orlando is a collaborative project between Florida Sea Grant (FSG), Ocean Conservancy (OC), and IDEAS for Us (IFU), funded by the National Sea Grant BIL Marine Debris Community Action Coalitions funding opportunity. Built on the framework of Ocean Conservancy’s pilot project in Miami-Dade, Plastic Free Cities Orlando trains high school students to become Junior Sustainability Consultants that will work with businesses in their local communities to help them reduce their plastic purchasing, with a goal of reducing waste, preventing marine debris, and supporting the City of Orlando in its efforts to go “zero-waste” by 2040. Students in the program go through 5 training sessions at their schools before participating in business canvassing, where they walk door-to-door to survey businesses about their current plastic usage, and offer recommendations and resources to help them reduce plastic while saving money. The trainings are designed to empower students to take action and become leaders in their communities, and each school involved in the program will plan and host a student-led community event to educate the broader community about the impacts of plastic pollution and marine debris. |
