Job Description:

This Farm Supervisor position works under primary supervisor Dr. Peter Dittmar as part of the North Florida IR4 Research Field Lab. This position is responsible for supervising the successful completion of research trials for the registration of pesticides in fruit and vegetable crops. The position will perform and supervise others in the application of pesticide treatments, scouting pest in fruit and vegetable crops, and collection of samples according to EPA Good Lab practices. The position will conduct research trials at various REC across the state and growers’ fields.

Specific duties and responsibilities include:

  • The supervisor will setup experimental fields and calculate the required field size to achieve proper yield according to the protocol.
    • During the planting season, the supervisor will monitor nutrient and water needs, and greenhouse maintenance.
    • The supervisor will work with farm crews or contractors for any repairs.
    • The supervisor must know EPA Good Lab Practices and standard operating procedures; verify that everyone participating in the trial has completed training and performing according to these practices.
  • Correspond with study directors and Quality Assurance personnel at the National IR4 headquarters about the capabilities of the facilities to complete a trial, failures during the growing season, and accurately completing a research trial.
    • The supervisor will correspond with Quality Control personnel at the Regional IR4 office to correct any problems in the research trial documentation.
  • Complete electronic QC and QA reports. The reports occur throughout the year at the completion of a field trial book.
    • The type of data collected in types of application equipment, temperature monitoring of samples and test material, soil type profiles.
    • The regional and national offices complete the reports and require a response for incorrect entries, deviations from protocol, etc.
  • Scout the field for weed, insect, and disease pests.
    • The supervisor will participate in pesticide applicator CEU training to increase their identification and control of the most common pest in fruit and vegetable crops.
    • The supervisor will apply or supervise the application of maintenance pesticides that are approved by study director and residue lab.
  • Harvest samples for pesticide residue analysis.
    • The samples must be collected according to SOP and protocol requirements, stored appropriately, and then shipped to the lab for analysis.
  • Attend training programs.
    • Field days and on-line service training that offer CEU’s for FDACS Pesticide License.
    • Regional and National IR4 training for Good Lab Practice updates and standard operating procedures.
Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education, skills and experience.

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and three years of experience working on an agricultural operation, including supervision of others. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required years of experience.

Valid Driver’s License.

FDACS Pesticide Applicator License.

Preferred:

A knowledge of pesticide application and specialty crop production.
