| Job Description: |
The radio frequency antennae coils and probes used in MRI and NMR, respectively, occasionally degrade in performance and need to be repaired. Very expensive capacitors and components must often be soldered which requires considerable skill. The ability to have these repaired in-house saves a great deal of time and money relative to sending them out for repair.
Fabrication of specialized parts enabling MRI and NMR experiments, coil construction, NMR probe construction, coil and probe repair, magnet maintenance, and ease of operations. Includes operation and maintenance of 3D printer and CNC system in the RF lab, assisting users and other staff with part designs, making recommendations for improvements in operations.
Orders cryogens and maintains liquid nitrogen and liquid helium levels for superconducting magnets. Monitors levels, arranges schedule for cryogen maintenance, responsible for ordering and monitoring of demurrage charges.
Preventative maintenance and repair of MRI systems. These systems must have minimal downtime as critical animal studies that depend on a specific time-course are disrupted if the system is not available. Scheduled replacement of filters and pump oils etc. can minimize the downtime as problems are prevented. When a hardware failure is reported, it is critical to get the problem diagnosed and to get the proper parts ordered and installed from the spectrometer vendor so as to keep downtime to a minimum.
Provides support for Xenon polarizer as part of a clinical trials consortium. This includes operation of the polarizer and ensuring instrument calibration, use, and performance records are maintained as determined by the staff scientists responsible for the polarizer.
Routine experiments may be collected for users who do not wish to be trained to collect their own data. Users pay a special fee to have our engineer collect the data for them. These consultant fees go to recover part of the engineers' salary.
Maintains maintenance records for four(4) NMR spectrometers NMR and MRI systems. Cryogen boil-off rates of magnets; shipping and tracking of all repair parts and repairs; running record of scheduled maintenance and upgrades.
General facility improvements and support. Running new air lines. Install UPS systems to protect systems from brownouts. Purchase of new stairs and platforms for better user access to magnets. Support users who have special needs such as special gases. Maintain program to recycle calibrated O2 sensors for the O2 alarm system.
