Job Description:

This position will be responsible for assisting with laboratory, greenhouse, mesocosm, and field research activities at the UF Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants (CAIP). This individual will also assist in day-to-day facilities (greenhouses, mesocosms, growth chambers) and equipment (vehicles, boats, small engines) operation and maintenance. The position will be stationed at the UF CAIP with occasional travel to field sites.

Assist with invasive aquatic plant management research and maintain research facilities at Center for Aquatic and Invasive Plants (CAIP). These efforts will require the individual to perform the following functions”:

Assist in the planning, organization, and implementation of laboratory, greenhouse, mesocosm, and field research including but not limited to soil preparation, fertilization, plant propagation, pesticide application, and data collection

Supervision, management, and training of OPS, Record keeping, collections and organization of data.  Procurement and inventory of supplies and bid preparations for equipment purchasing

Maintain (repair, calibration, servicing, etc.) field and laboratory research equipment as necessary including but not limited to vehicles, boats, trailers, growth chambers, and various scientific instrumentation.

Expected Salary:

$21.55 per hour commensurate with education and experience

Required Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent and two years of relevant experience.  Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

The ability to lift 50 lbs and work outside in strenuous conditions (heat and inclement weather) is required.

Strong time management skills are needed, as this position will require the applicant to coordinate multiple, simultaneous projects and oversee OPS workers. The ability to work independently without direct supervision is crucial.

Communications with facilities management as needed to ensure proper maintenance of research infrastructure, e.g., greenhouses.

Preferred:

Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Botany, Ecology, Environmental Science, or related field and experience in laboratory management preferably in plant science or ecological research.

 Experience in aquatic plant production in controlled environments, such as greenhouses and mesocosms, is strongly desired. This would include familiarity with irrigation, plant fertility, and pest management
