Classification Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five years of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.

Job Description:

Develops protocols for the molecular identification and/or quantification of insects, mites, and associated microorganisms.  Designs, conducts, and evaluates laboratory and field experiments with invasive species attacking fruit crops, ornamentals and arthropods inhabiting natural areas, with an emphasis on vectors of plant pathogens. Collaborate with professionals in other fields to analyze problems and recommend solutions. Improves methods of study based on findings.

Oversees, trains, and directs other staff employees on data collection. Train students and personnel in the basic molecular techniques and the use of molecular lab equipment.

Disseminate research results through written reports, peer review publications, and extension material of research findings for publication in coordination with faculty.

Lab management including the upkeep of lab colonies of arthropods and their associated microorganisms and troubleshooting of lab equipment.

Present during seminars at National and International Meetings as well as presentation of research results at grower meetings when current supervisor is unable to attend those meetings. 

Expected Salary:

$53,000-$86,000 commensurate with education and experience

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biology or a related field and seven years of experience or Master’s degree in biology or a related field with five years of experience. Doctoral degree in biology or related field with two years of experience.

Preferred:

Ph.D. in Biological Sciences; knowledge of tropical fruit crops, horticulture, and statistics. Demonstrated experience working with arthropod vectors of plant pathogens including publications in this subject. Experience with molecular techniques and microbiology. Experience working with mite transmitted viruses
