Laboratory Technician I

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area; or a high school diploma or equivalent and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Maintaining termite laboratory colonies:
Ensure that colonies of all ages (from 0-year-old to 15-year-old) are properly fed, watered, and that they are held in appropriate container size.  Termite colonies must continue to thrive and grow over time, and prevent any stress that could prevent their optimal health for experimental purposes. Termite colonies require:
◦ Wood
◦ Soil.
◦ Space
◦ Water
◦ Time
For this reason all termite colonies must be checked regularly on a rotation schedule and must be prevented from being stressed or from escaping.

Laboratory experimental support:
Assists faculty and student of the termite laboratory as needed when an experiment requires help for setting or data collection. Experiment varies over time and flexibility in organization is necessary so as to not interfere with colony maintenance schedules.

Extension events:
throughout the year, several extension events are held at the FLREC by the Termite Laboratory. Logistical assistance for preparing the venue for guests, preparing educational material will be necessary so as to provide a high level of service to stakeholders.

Laboratory hygiene:
this position will help maintain the laboratory clean and ready for use for all research and extension activities. Other duties as assign.

$15.81 /hour commensurate with experience and education

Associate’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization or a high school diploma and two years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Experience in insect rearing in laboratory setup.
