Job Description:

The Department of Medicine, Institute for Therapeutic Innovation is seeking a full time Medical Scientist III. This position will use technical problem-solving skills to perform standardized or repetitive testing in the BSL2 and BSL3 microbiology laboratory of the UF Institute for Therapeutic Innovation in Orlando, FL. This position will be responsible for conducting novel experiments using Pharmacokinetic / Pharmacodynamic principles to develop antimicrobial drug regimens that optimize the treatment of infections. The employee will follow all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to assigned laboratory and animal facilities and will be registered with the USDA and US Dept. HHS for access to high consequence biological agents. Work practices will follow strict biosafety and biosecurity protocols. The individual must obtain and maintain all required security and suitability clearances. Due to federal regulation, the position is open to US citizens only. Offer contingent on a successful pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.

Essential Functions;

Laboratory and husbandry functions:
Participate in therapeutic experiments using antibiotics or other compounds and be available for variable therapeutic dosing schedules. Perform all work with viable select biological agents in a BSL-3 biocontainment suite(s).  This effort may require vaccinations and use of personal protective equipment, as appropriate. Assist with and performs work including, but not limited to, the following:
• Perform laboratory tests/experiments in the BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratories following established procedures or protocols without deviations unless approved by laboratory manager or supervisor. Conduct studies using Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and assist with generation of standard operating procedures and reports that meet these standards.
• Harvest, purification and storage of bacterial cells and spores.
•Prepare sterile solutions for use in microbial assays. Prepare solutions and reagents following standard laboratory procedures. Use of a spectrophotometer and ultracentrifugation.
• Determination of the viability and purity of suspensions of infectious agents.
• Performance of ELISA and toxin neutralization assays on sera from animals.
• Prepare, clean, and sterilize glassware and instruments, general laboratory housekeeping and animal husbandry. Solve laboratory equipment and experimentation set up problems.
• Assist in design and preparation of all models, including animal, minimum inhibitory concentration and hollow fiber infection studies. Will include but not limited to inoculations and drug therapy procedures.
• Be able to perform administration of bacteria and therapeutics via nasal passages, sub cutaneous injections, intra peritoneal injections, intramuscular injections and oral gavage technics. Assist in training on techniques in BSL2 and BSL3 including but not limited to animal necropsies, tissue processing and inactivation protocols
• Monitor inventory levels, count/record orders upon receipt and maintain accountability records.
• Performance of cell labeling and cell sorting experiments.
• Preparation of DNA/RNA, PCR and analysis of samples.
• The use of computer for ordering supplies, and processing, analyzing, and storing data will be required.
• Specific projects may utilize GLP requirements/documentation.
• Animal husbandry duties and general cleaning. 
• Autoclaving, waste removal and general cleaning duties required.
• Present data at weekly meeting.
• Be willing to accept additional roles and responsibilities as required.
• Meet schedules and deadlines as set by supervisory personnel.

Compliance: Assist with conducting all required IACUC and BSL2/3 safety inspections and maintaining operational status

Assist with maintaining regulatory records of laboratory operations.
Responsible for preparing laboratory and vivarium for inspections and audits through daily common practices.
Responsible for maintaining an operational and safety environment.
Required annual Trainings, manual and SOP reviews.
Required to keep inventory records and data management in compliance
Including but not limited to animal husbandry duties
Keep Laboratory Manager well informed of any issues in the laboratory including practices, equipment, training, supplies, and records.

Export Control Training

General Supervision and Management:
Provides input into process development/improvement based on observations made in the laboratory and literature reviews. Assist with managing of inventory of supplies and ordering common use supplies. Assist in making arrangements for maintenance of laboratory and experimental equipment to be decontaminated form the BSL3 laboratory. Assist with gathering, organizing, verifying and validating data for generating manuscripts and reports. Assist with CO2 tanks and Laundry deliveries. Must have the flexibility to work as a backup that requires to be positioned within 20 minutes of the building of on-call schedules.  Will require minimal travel to the Main campus on average once a year. Travel as needed for conferences.

Expected Salary:

$60,000 - $70,000 Annually

Doctoral degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field and two years of relevant experience; or a master’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and five years of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and seven years of relevant experience.

Preferred:

Other preferred qualifications include 3 years of experience in BSL3 containment suite supervisor, ALAAS certification, animal husbandry and BSL2 experience. Experience with mentorship practice in BSL3 work environment specifically.  Experience working with vertebrate animals in a laboratory research setting and Organizational skills and ability to pay close attention to detail is essential.
