Job Description: |
The Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences in the Engineering School of Sustainable Infrastructure & the Environment (ESSIE) in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering at the University of Florida invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track, 9-month faculty position in any area of Environmental Engineering (air, ecological engineering, sustainable materials management, and water). We seek innovative and motivated candidates who are committed to advancing research and education in these critical areas and linking engineering solutions to pressing societal needs. We anticipate that the successful candidate will be hired at the rank of Assistant Professor, but candidates at all ranks will be considered.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop a robust research program. We are particularly interested in candidates focused on (i) environmental change and adaptation, (ii) design challenges for a future with minimal pollution, and (iii) contributing to the creation of efficient, healthy, and resilient towns and cities. We are also interested in candidates who can apply advanced technologies such as AI, remote sensing, data analytics, and robotics to environmental engineering problems, and contribute to broadening the department’s scope into emerging areas. Additional responsibilities include supervising graduate student research, teaching undergraduate, and graduate courses, and actively participating in departmental service activities.
In addition to contributing to a vibrant academic environment, candidates are expected to build strong collaborations with regional and national institutions, as well as industry partners. These partnerships will support the exploration, prototyping, and testing of cutting-edge technologies and practices in real-world applications, helping to bridge the gap between academic research and practical implementation.
The field of environmental engineering is undergoing a transformative shift, driven by the integration of multidisciplinary approaches and the adoption of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and intelligent automation. As environmental change, urbanization, and resource scarcity intensify, there is an urgent need for data-driven, adaptive, and socially responsive solutions. This evolution calls for a new generation of engineers who can combine traditional environmental science with advanced computational tools, systems thinking, and community engagement to address complex challenges, develop resilient infrastructure, and ensure sustainable management of environmental resources.
The University of Florida is strategically positioned to lead in this evolving discipline. The ideal candidate will help shape the future of the field through the integration of emerging technologies and the development of high-impact, scalable, and sustainable engineering practices. This position offers a unique opportunity to influence both academic research and real-world applications at a leading public research university.
