The Opportunity

The UF Student Health Care Center is currently hiring for two dedicated and experienced Registered Nurse I (RN I) positions in Student Health Care Psychiatry (SHCC Psychiatry) to join our team. This role provides patient care within the standards of the RN License in SHCC Psychiatry. The RN I supports psychiatry providers by coordinating clinical activities, interfacing with SHCC providers and Counseling and Wellness Center (CWC) counselors and facilitating student access to counseling and psychiatric services.

The Essential Functions of the positions are as follows:

Coordinate prescription refills in collaboration with the Psychiatric providers. Assist with medication Pre-Authorizations. Assist patients with telephone management of medication concerns, side effects, and referrals when indicated. Assist patients with laboratory referrals and results to the providers. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in psychiatric nursing practice, including a working knowledge of emergency procedures, equipment, and supplies. Considers factors relating to safety, effectiveness and cost in planning and delivering patient care. 

Assess patients' Vital Signs and provide patient education in general health maintenance and preventive care.  Document all care and services within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR), Epic.

Triage patients referred to SHCC Psychiatry.  Obtain and review intake records, previous provider records, and current medical/mental health history to determine acuity and need for services. Collaborate closely with Psychiatry providers regarding high-risk patients to ensure continuity of care and safety.  Communicate with patients to assure compliance with care and follow-up.

Assist with referrals to CWC and to community psychiatric and medical services. Maintain patient contact to ensure services were received and documented. Understand and contribute to the implementation of departmental and institutional goals for achieving non-discrimination and creating a multicultural environment.

Attend SHCC Psychiatry Team meetings, and Nursing Staff meetings at SHCC. Participate in programs of quality improvement, peer review, and continuing education.

Provide consultation with SHCC providers and CWC counseling staff regarding SHCC Psychiatry services. Perform other related duties as required.

Normal Work Schedule:

  • Monday – Friday: 8:00 am-5:00 pm; 40 hours per week
  • Hours and days may vary according to the needs of SHCC Psychiatry and unforeseen closures.
  • Provides weekend coverage as assigned.

Expected Salary:

$28 - $31 hourly

Full-time TEAMS employees will accrue vacation leave at a rate of 6.769 hours biweekly/22 days annually and sick leave at a rate of 4 hours biweekly/13 days annually. In addition, employees are eligible for ten paid holidays each year.

Required Qualifications:
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statutes.
  • Current CPR certification
  • American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse – Board Certification required upon hire, or within two years of hire at the Student Health Care Center
Preferred:

Education and Training

  • Licensed as a registered nurse in accordance with Chapter 464, Florida Statues*, or eligible to practice nursing in accordance with Section 210, Florida Administrative Code* and two years of appropriate experience.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree is highly preferred.
  • Appropriate college coursework may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

 

Experience

  • Psychiatry experience in outpatient or inpatient facility or comparable exposure to patients with mental health needs in the medical environment.

 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge to provide patient care using sound nursing practice including knowledge of pathophysiology;
  • Knowledge of and experience in the field of Mental Health, including knowledge of common psychiatric medications and their side effects. Familiarity with the EMR’s used in Psychiatry and ability to utilize the EMR’s to document patient interactions.

Skills

  • Skilled in administering intramuscular, subcutaneous, and intradermal injections
  • Skilled in administering oxygen
  • Skilled in starting, monitoring and administering intravenous (IV) fluids and medications
  • Skilled in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Skilled in performing wound care and Point-of-Care Testing

Abilities

  • Ability to communicate efficiently in writing and verbally with patients, family members and staff
  • Ability to take pertinent histories and document in appropriate health records
  • Ability to administer medications

Ability to provide treatment to patient using SHCC/SHCC Psychiatry guidelines, policies and procedures.
