Job Description:

EXPERIMENT PREPARATION AND SUPPLIES - Prepare reagents and unknowns for various experiments and refill containers when empty. Notify the Senior Teaching Laboratory Specialist when supplies and reagents need to be restocked. Collaborate with the Laboratory Coordinator in the development and testing of new or modified experiments before they are adopted for student use. Prepare the laboratory space for each experiment including distribution of supplies and reagents. Perform regular, routine maintenance as necessary for laboratory instruments such as balances, rotary evaporators, IRs, NMRs, and computers. Ensure the laboratory and preparatory room are clean and compliant with current regulations as determined by governmental agencies (EH&S, EPA, and OSHA).

NORMAL LAB OPERATIONS – Monitor laboratory operations and facilitate safety standards and appropriate behavior by all members in the laboratory. Assist the Senior Teaching Laboratory Specialist in monitoring graduate level teaching assistants, stockroom assistants, and undergraduate students. Monitor students as they enter the laboratory and periodically walk around the lab space while experiments are being conducted. Correct any inappropriate activities or course/laboratory violations. Report problems encountered by students or teaching assistants as they perform experiments to the Senior Teaching Laboratory Specialist. Routinely inspect student work areas for cleanliness and compliance in between class periods and restock supplies as needed. Enforce rules about cleanliness as necessary. Assist in the training and supervision of student assistants and teaching assistants.

SAFETY & ACCIDENT RESPONSIBILITIES - Report maintenance problems (i.e., leaking sinks, fume hood deficiencies, vacuum system issues, etc.) to work@chem.ufl.edu to facilitate prompt repair. Ensure accidents, injuries, or other medical emergencies in the laboratory are handled promptly, appropriately, and are documented. See that chemical spills and broken glass are cleaned up promptly and appropriately. Oversee and enforce the practice of appropriate laboratory safety by all stockroom personnel, teaching assistants, and students. Maintain records of safety-practice violations and coordinate with the Senior Teaching Lab Specialist and the Laboratory Coordinator to promote a safe laboratory environment.

 Inspect and clean laboratory periodically during the semester and during each term break.  This duty includes maintenance of all gas jets, water spigots, fume hoods, electrical outlets, vacuum systems, equipment lockers, and anything else important to the proper functioning of the laboratory.  It also includes restocking supplies, laboratory reagents and solutions. 

Expected Salary:

$19.00 - $21.50

Required Qualifications:

A high school diploma and four years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred:

Basic concepts and principles of general and organic chemistry, as well as basic algebra.  Procedures, equipment, and apparatus-design for use in a chemistry teaching lab.  Understand techniques for lab testing and analysis as applicable to a chemistry teaching lab.  Ability to train others and ability to work well with others.  Knowledge of chemical formulae, and a high degree of mechanical aptitude to maintain laboratory equipment.
