Job Description: |
The Quality and Patient Safety initiative (QPSi) under the UF College of Medicine (COM) is seeking a Data Scientist II to help improve quality and patient safety using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced data analytics. The data scientist will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams and numerous stakeholders to create innovative approaches to improve patient safety and health care operation pathways. The position will participate in designing and developing algorithms to model complex systems, meeting with end-users and key stakeholders to understand operational questions to be addressed, and working with other team members to support development of AI models and their impact in clinical setting.
Leveraging expertise in statistical analysis, machine learning, novel artificial intelligence methods, and programming, the incumbent will drive data-centric solutions to enhance health care outcomes. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to independently select appropriate methods and techniques to deliver impactful results for quality improvement initiatives.
About This Role:
Data Science and Model Development
- Collaborate with clinical teams to design data-driven decision-making models and translate decision points into available clinical data by understanding how to measure improvements in quality and patient safety.
- Develop novel process mining techniques, including but not limited to sequence analysis, soft clustering, temporal data analysis, and graph neural network predictions, to answer client’s questions related to patient safety and patient healthcare pathways.
- Research, pilot, and recommend solutions for extracting and visualizing clinical processes from rich healthcare data.
- Develop, train, tune, and evaluate highly performant machine learning and AI models (including graph approaches, natural language processing, and other advanced techniques) to address quality improvement and patient safety challenges in a hospital setting, with a focus on handling complex and sensitive healthcare data such as electronic health records (EHRs).
- Develop innovative approaches to integrate different data modalities (e.g., processes, sequences, text) into models.
- Assist with integration of developed models into production environment.
Enhancement of Data and Model Infrastructure
- Assist in development of streamlined pipelines from data gathering to data analysis and visual representation to deployment of models in clinical settings ensuring continuous integration and delivery (CI/CD), automated testing, monitoring, and model retraining.
- Contribute code to standard AI and machine learning pipelines, ensuring reproducibility and efficient collaboration across the team.
- Facilitate extracting clinically relevant features from raw data to match needs of each healthcare scenario.
- Develop process-driven and sequence-driven features for classification and other types of AI models. Contribute to designing and implementing feature extraction workflows, including handling missing data, categorical encoding, and creation of derived variables.
- Investigate and adapt existing programming libraries for visual representation of detected changes in clinical workflows and patient outcomes.
- Participate in data quality evaluation and defining standards for data quality checks with special focus on understanding nuisances of healthcare data.
Project Management
-
Assist with the organization and coordination of projects, including internship projects.
-
Collaborate with key stakeholders and interdisciplinary teams to understand user needs; draft initial proposals and assess feasibility.
-
Develop technical documentation.
Knowledge Dissemination
-
Create comprehensive reports and documentation summarizing the project status, summary recommendations, and final outcomes.
-
Train QPSi AI/QI team, healthcare professionals, and stakeholders in process mining and other cutting-edge approaches and capabilities.
-
Collaborate with teams and subject matter experts to prepare technical and non-technical presentations, analyses, and reports for leadership, program design reviews, and operational readiness reviews to share knowledge and promote partnership.
-
Participate in the development of educational resources and training materials on AI, process mining, and data science best practices for a wide range of healthcare professionals.
