Job Description:

The Department of Medicine, Division of Institute for Therapeutic Innovations is seeking a full time Medical Scientist II. With supervision from the Principal Investigator or their designee, the Medical Scientist II will use technical problem solving skills to perform standardized tests in the Virology BSL2 and BSL3 laboratories at the Institute for Therapeutic Innovation in Orlando, FL. This position will be responsible for conducting Antiviral Pharmacodynamics experiments after receiving a general overview of the experimental design from the PI or their designee. The incumbent will also perform data analysis and solve laboratory equipment and experimentation set up problems.

The employee will follow all federal, state and local regulations pertaining to assigned laboratory and animal facilities and will be registered with the USDA and US Dept. HHS for access to high consequence biological agents. Work practices will follow strict biosafety and biosecurity protocols. The individual must obtain and maintain all required security and suitability clearances. Offer contingent on a successful pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks, and verification of education.

Essential Functions;

5Independently performs routine and non-routine experiments and procedures in the BSL2 and BSL3 virology laboratories that are moderate to complex following established procedures or protocols. Procedures may include preparing sterile solutions for use in microbial assays; cleaning and sterilizing glassware and instruments; propagating viruses in cell culture for experiments; conducting assays for quantifying virus; calculating viral burden from biological assays; growth curve generation; Serial dilutions of viral samples and microbiological solutions; conduct reactions for sequencing; interpret sequencing results; conduct efficacy assays for antivirals; calculate EC50 values from antiviral assays; making drug solutions at the required concentrations; perform flow cytometry assays; design and perform real-time quantitative RT-PCR assays; design rodent models for viral infections and perform antiviral evaluations with rodent model systems. 

Assist in design, modifications, and preparation of Antiviral Hollow Fiber and Animal model experiments with high skill level. Should be able to generate high quality data and be able to recognize when data does not meet specifications and why. May be involved in developing new methods and procedures with frequent reporting to Lab Manager/PI the progress accomplished in tasks.

Maintain detailed notebook clearly describing the studies and results. Performs data analysis and presents experimental data clearly and concisely to the project manager and supervisors at anytime, including weekly laboratory meetings. Assists with literature searches and should be able to adapt new methods and protocols to meet the experimental needs of the laboratory. Assists with creating graphs for presentation and publication.

Instruct technicians and visitors on experimental methods that are used in the laboratory and monitor the quality of data generated by others. Monitor inventory levels and count/record orders upon receipt.

Expected Salary:

$46,000 - $51,000 Annually

Required Qualifications:

Doctoral degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology or a closely related field; or a master’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor’s degree in health sciences, medical engineering, biology, or a closely related field and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred:

Active Security Risk Assessment and clearance the Federal Select Agent Program to access select agents.
At least 3 years of experience working in a BSL3 Laboratory
At least 3 years of experience in microbiological drug assays.
Experience in working with Hollow Fiber Bioreactors.
Experience in working with respiratory viruses
Experience in working with BSL3 agents

Must be able to independently conduct all functions with high quality experimental outputs and limited supervision.

Organizational skills and ability to pay close attention to details is essential
