Job Description: |
The incumbent in this position serves as an Academic Advisor within the Academic Advising Team within the UF Innovation Academy. The primary responsibility of this position includes providing high quality undergraduate advising to innovation academy students. These responsibilities include but are not limited to collaboration with departmental advising faculty and staff across the participating IA colleges, working with students through the probation process, active engagement with students and families during orientation (Preview), assessment of advising outcomes, data analysis and reporting, undergraduate recruitment and active participation in the University Advising Council.
Engagement of Undergraduate IA Students through Proactive Advising:
- Responsible for advisement and counseling of Innovation Academy students as it relates to the IA innovation minor and IA related advising issues. Guides students in finding the appropriate IA major and necessary resources to ensure retention in the major, throughout all years in undergraduate education at UF.
- Meets with IA students during Advanced Registration to lift holds and ensure adherence to innovation minor tracking requirements. Analyzes Universal Tracking progress for Innovation Minor and places holds on records.
- Develop nurturing relationships with advisees, providing opportunities for students to meet regularly in meaningful ways to catalyze development of the students.
- Provides counseling to assist students in course selection, study skills and career development plans for academic and personal success. Assists students with the identification of long-term goals and career plans. Works to position students to meet requirements for graduation while preparing them to achieve future career goals.
- Contributes to the development of materials used in Preview and is willing to work closely with the Dean of Students Office in organization of the Innovation Academy Preview sessions and other campus advising staff.
- Manages the basic communication and transfer of necessary information to student advisees.
- Designs printed materials, web pages, etc. in the areas of major requirements and career planning; handles phone calls, email responses, and other forms of inquiry from current and prospective students.
- Acts as mentor and trainer to other Academic Advisors. Serves as a team leader and may supervise other advisors.
- Develops advising practices and policies, conducts comprehensive academic, career, and other student support services as needed
- Compares and contrasts academic options that facilitate or impede students’ academic skill development
- Partners in the development and execution of Salesforce Lobby Management tools and functions for the Innovation Academy
- Creates and provides documents and training opportunities regarding IA policies and procedures for new UF advisors and IA Advisor Liaisons
- Models the core values for the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA) Academic Advisor.
- Assists IA Fall Internship Coordinator to review all prospective interns fall schedules, provide consultation to students, and register them for IDS4941.
Innovation Academy Communication and Marketing:
- Functions as a member of the Innovation Academy professional team with the common goal of advising for retention and successful graduation of all innovation academy students.
- Contributes to the goal of welcoming and transitioning freshmen students through orientation (Preview) and Convocation in collaboration with the IA Assistant Director.
- Meets incoming newly admitted students and families for next steps via phone, email, zoom, or in-person meetings as needed.
- Guides advisees towards the tremendous value of engagement in student organizations; works with the Assistant Director of the Innovation Academy in placing freshmen students in appropriate student organizations during their first year.
- Provides Assistant Director with advising-related updates for the website or social media postings
- Coordinates advising programs such as peer advising, career placement, internships, or other college programs
- Attends meeting for Director as appropriate.
University Service:
- Develops strong working relationships with college advisors; a strong emphasis on relationship-building will be placed on the specific colleges that will assume advising responsibilities for advisees simultaneously with the Innovation Academy Office; ensure that all advisees have begun building relationships with college advisors.
- Serves on appropriate department, college and/or campus advisor committees including the Undergraduate Advising Council.
- Works directly with Innovation Academy participating colleges, UF Registrar, UF Housing, Student Financial Aid, Counseling and Wellness Center, Career Resources Center, New Student and Family Programs and other units within the Dean of Students Office.
- Collaborates with UF College Partners to receive updated eight-semester plans for IA students.
- Communicates IA-related program or curriculum changes to IA College Advisor Liaisons.
- Provides information and statistical analysis to college and university units including enrolment statistics, First Fall Connection coursework and student achievement. Analyzes data and prepares reports as appropriate
- Works closely with the Registrar’s Office to ensure proper coding of IAC and IAOK class attributes
- Responsible for reporting incidents of sexual harassment/misconduct to the University Title IX Office

Required Qualifications: |
Master's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility and two years of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor's area of responsibility and three years of relevant experience.

Preferred: |
A minimum of two years of experience in academic advising and/or counselling undergraduate students at a large four-year land-grant institution.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Proven skills in effective written and oral communication and ability to keep detailed records of student advising
Track record of high levels of student service, attention to detail, working knowledge of University of Florida regulations and procedures to facilitate recruitment, excellent judgment, multicultural competency, and sensitivity
Candidate should be energetic, organized, solution oriented and possess strong collaboration, multi-tasking, and teamwork skills.
Possess a collaborative, team mentality when interfacing with partners on the UF campus.
