Job Description:

The Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville, is seeking a Surgical Oncologist at the non-tenure accruing level of Clinical Assistant Professor/Associate Professor / Professor. The Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville is a tertiary referral center that serves the population of Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. It is home to the divisions of Gastrointestinal Surgery/Surgical Oncology, Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Trauma/Acute Care/Critical Care, and Vascular Surgery. The Department of Surgery is poised for significant growth as we expand the elective surgical practice throughout the Northeast region. The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery/Surgical Oncology currently has eleven faculty members with subspecialties of breast surgery, colon and rectal surgery, endocrine surgery, hepatopancreaticobiliary/esophageal surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. The division has plans to expand by at least three faculty members in the next 12 months to accommodate continued growth across the region.

We are seeking a candidate with broad clinical experience in general surgical oncology, with a focus in all aspects of complex surgical oncology including hepatobiliary, pancreatic, esophageal, gastric, melanoma, sarcoma, and HIPEC. The candidate must be MD or DO, Board Certified/Eligible in General Surgery with preference for completion of a Surgical Oncology or HPB fellowship. Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Surgery in Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO) is also preferred. A successful candidate must have experience in minimally invasive surgery including robotic and laparoscopic surgery. Major responsibilities include building and expanding an already successful surgical oncology practice as well as providing education of medical students and residents. The position does not require general surgery call or trauma responsibilities. Candidate will join a diverse academic surgical oncology practice inclusive of growing an advanced GI/MIS, endoscopic, robotic, and oncologic program.  

This position will report to the Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Surgical Oncology and Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville. Every faculty member in the department will have a mentoring team assigned to them and participate in the department wide faculty development program.

The following is a general description of duties and responsibilities:

  • Provide and maintain a high level of quality patient care services in all aspects of Surgical Oncology
  • Demonstrate high standards of care through collaboration with physicians, surgeons, clinical professionals and staff.
  • Provide clinical teaching of trainees and actively participate in the educational program.
  • Be responsible for excellent communication with primary care physicians, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, consulting services, and other referring providers.
  • Assist in marketing the Surgical Oncology Programs to community physicians and managed care organizations.
  • Actively participate in monthly division and department meetings, administrative functions and institutional committees as requested.

Expected Salary:

Salary and academic appointment is negotiable and the benefits are excellent.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates should have a MD/DO from an accredited institution or the highest degree appropriate in the field of specialization

Board eligible or board certified in General Surgery

Must have or obtain unrestricted Florida medical license

Preferred Qualifications:

Successful completion of a Surgical Oncology or HPB fellowship.

Certification or eligibility for certification by the American Board of Surgery in Complex General Surgical Oncology (CGSO).

Exceptional candidates who are not eligible for ABS/CGSO certification with a focus on oncologic surgery, or who may have completed Surgical Oncology training prior to CGSO certification, are encouraged to apply
