Job Description:

Extraction and Analysis of Pesticide Residue Samples
Extract pesticide residues from various agricultural commodities using validated methods. Prepare samples for analysis using techniques such as homogenization, centrifugation, and filtration. Implement new sample preparation methods as needed to improve analytical performance.
Analyze samples using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and occasionally using gas chromatography (GC) coupled to various detection systems, primarily triple quadrupole or Orbitrap mass spectrometry.
Perform routine quality control checks (e.g., system suitability, calibration verification) to ensure data quality and accuracy.
Document and report any issues or discrepancies in data quality or instrument performance.

Method Evaluation
Reviews literature pertinent to latest developments in pesticide residue analysis, including new methods, instruments, and technologies. Evaluate analytical methods and modify as necessary to achieve acceptable method performance for difficult matrices i.e., dried herbs, oils, nutmeats, processed seed meal, etc. Improve methods for extraction and analysis of pesticides in various crop matrices.
Optimize analytical instrument parameters to achieve acceptable, reliable performance for the analysis of multiple analytes.

Data Review and Report Preparation
Review data for quality and accuracy, including checks for contamination, instrument malfunctions, and other issues.
Perform data analysis to determine pesticide concentrations and calculate quality control parameters (e.g.,fortified sample recovery).
Prepare draft final reports and collect documentation required for Quality Assurance review.
Review current laboratory standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with EPA GLPs.
Collaborate with other laboratory personnel to prepare reports and presentations.

General Maintenance
Conduct routine instrument cleaning, maintenance, and basic instrument troubleshooting.
Contact contracted service providers for instrument repairs and maintenance.
Document required repairs and service.
Perform general lab maintenance and cleaning, including cleaning of equipment and facilities.
Maintain a clean and organized workspace.


Participate in required training activities, including instrument-specific training and laboratory safety training. Other duties as assigned.

Expected Salary:

$50,000 - $70,000

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and three years of experience in the field or in a related area; or a master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and one year of experience in the field or in a related area; or Doctoral degree in chemistry or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of chemistry with an emphasis on analytical chemistry.
Experience with procedures and techniques required for trace level residue analysis of pesticides.
Knowledge and experience in instrumental analysis techniques such as gas chromatography (GC), high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
Knowledge and experience using triple quadrupole and high-resolution mass spectrometers.
Knowledge of computer software used for data processing.
Good Laboratory Practice compliance training and experience working under GLP regulations.
