Job Description: |
- Sample Receipt and Preparation:
Conducts independent review of samples while utilizing predominantly established protocols, ensuring accurate and timely handling of the incoming samples. Reviews submission form and sample identifications for completeness, and notifies supervisors of any discrepancies or issues. Prepares samples and maintains accurate records of sample preparation steps and analysis process. Extracts and digests soil, water, and plant tissue samples in a timely manner using various laboratory techniques, including but not limited to, homogenization, filtration, and centrifugation.
- Sample Analysis:
Calibrates and performs quality control checks on assigned instruments as required and troubleshoots any issues that arise. Operates dry combustion analyzers, muffle furnaces, stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS), inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometers (ICP-OES), and other laboratory equipment as needed to quantify desired analytes. Analyzes results of testing.
- Data Compilation Entry and Reporting:
Compiles results and tabulates data according to Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) protocols, ensuring accuracy and attention to detail. Identifies any data discrepancies or errors and notifies supervising Chemist. Manually enters or electronically uploads data into the WebLIMS, web-based Laboratory Information Management Software. Maintains accurate and detailed records of laboratory activities, including sample receipt, preparation, and analysis.
- Inventory Management and Laboratory Maintenance:
Maintains labware, chemical, and waste inventory used for assigned instrument(s). Orders supplies and materials as needed, and maintains accurate records of inventory levels. Cleans and maintains laboratory equipment and facilities, including but not limited to, instruments, workstations, and common areas. Performs routine maintenance tasks, including cleaning, of the assigned instruments.
- Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. 40 hours a week. Some flexibility must be allowed strictly based on the need to accommodate sample loads and turnaround times.

Expected Salary: |
$17.00-$20.00 per hour
|
Minimum Requirements: |
Associate degree in an appropriate area and two years of related experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications: |
Bachelor’s degree with at least 16 credit hours in Chemistry, including Introduction to Analytical Chemistry, plus laboratory experience in analytical methodologies and procedures such as dry combustion and stable isotope determination, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, and continuous flow analysis. Ability to conduct lab procedures with high accuracy and precision, and execute QA/QC protocols. Exceptional data management. Basic maintenance of the laboratory instruments. Ability to keep track of several procedures running concurrently.
