Job Description:

The IFAS Department of Animal Sciences (ANS) is seeking an individual for a full-time position who will be responsible for advising undergraduate students in the ANS major. The role includes advising and helping ANS students with course selection and scheduling, running degree audits, and discussing career options to meet educational needs and realize student scholastic goals. The incumbent also assists with organization of undergraduate student events, recruiting, and contributes to improvement of overall academic advising. This position is ideal for an organized, self-motivated individual with a genuine interest in the success and well-being of ANS undergraduate students.

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

- Advise and help ANS students with course selection and scheduling, running degree audits, and discussing career options. A portion of this effort is done through email, phone, and social media.

- Stay abreast of educational and administrative rules and policies related to student advising. 

- Responsible for or assist with organization of undergraduate student events such as new student orientation and recruiting. This includes events on campus or outside of Gainesville. 

- Contribute to improvement of overall academic advising, including the development of advising materials.

- Maintain electronic databases of undergraduate student data in cooperation with the Department, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and UF. Schedule courses and classrooms. Assist the undergraduate coordinator with administrative tasks and communications with faculty and staff.

- Assist in evaluating new teaching resources and equipment and new multimedia resources. Recommend new and improved programs and/or technologies to help faculty effectively deliver educational programs and improve the student experience. 

Normal Work Schedule:

Monday–Friday 8:00 am to 5:00pm (40 hours per week).  Some variations in schedule may occur for departmental events held outside of regular office hours.

Expected Salary:

$48,000 - $55,000 annually; commensurate with education and experience

Minimum Requirements:

Master’s degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor’s area of responsibility and one year of relevant experience; or a bachelor's degree in education, counseling, or an academic field directly related to the advisor’s area of responsibility and two years of relevant experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Some formal training in an area of study related to animal sciences.

Experience in advising and counseling students at the undergraduate level.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Working knowledge of UF regulations and procedures to facilitate student counseling.

Affinity with the teaching, research and Extension mission of the Department of Animal Sciences.
