Gross Room: The incumbent is responsible for the accurate and timely gross examination and dictation of specimens, cassette printing, bottle identification, and case number designation. Receive, correlate paperwork with specimens received. Work and communicate with personnel from submitting accounts as well as couriers. Resolve discrepancies, working with others in order to expedite cases. Assist with administrative tasks, as needed, such as computer assistance with manuals. Dispose of tissue from completed surgical specimens in a timely manner. Oversee inventory of the lab and places orders as needed. Keep chemical and biohazard elements properly maintained, stored, and disposed. Function as safety representative and monitor for department. Clean laboratory equipment and spaces, including bench-tops, and storage areas.
Electron Microscopy: Under general supervision, perform routine and advanced transmission electron microscope (TEM). Process specimens using plastic resin for clinical purposes and set up clinical cases. Use ultramicrotome to cut and prepare specimens for observation under an electron microscope and maintain diamond knives. Prepare and perform negative staining of the specimen. Under pathologist supervision, perform specialized photographic techniques to capture and produce digital images. Manage the digital archives of images and make images available electronically to users.
Immunofluorescence: Perform specialized cutting techniques for frozen specimens using a cryostat. Titrate antibodies and stain specimens. Maintain quality assurance paperwork and shipping of specimens to assigned pathologists. Maintain accurate frozen specimen storage and organize control slides.
Enzyme Staining: Under pathologist supervision, perform specialized techniques using liquid nitrogen and cut frozen specimens using a cryostat. Prepare and maintain specialized stains unique to enzyme staining. Maintain chemical inventory to ensure all chemicals are available as needed. Perform quality assurance for cases to maintain quality.
Records and Safety: Maintain records in accordance with regulations. Create and ship cases to assigned personnel. Perform laboratory safety procedures and ensure compliance of quality control standards. When fully trained, assist with training other technicians. Aid in editing or drafting standard operating procedures. Develop specimen preparation techniques, draft and/or update procedures under general supervision when necessary. Maintain and clean ancillary equipment including ultramicrotome, cryostat, fume hood, and digital camera based on checklists and report any equipment issues
