Job Description:

The Florida Museum of Natural History is seeking an Outreach Education Assistant. This position within the education team will focus on expanding outreach programming for non-traditional audiences and developing, delivering and evaluating informal science education programs. Ensures programs are innovative, effective, scientifically accurate, entrepreneurial, and directly support the Museum’s mission of inspiring people to care about life on Earth. Maintains a positive community focus, providing excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders and collaborators. This time-limited position is initially funded for one year, with the possibility of a second year if funding is available.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Develops, coordinates, and implements community, in person and virtual, outreach programs for a wide range of audiences, from early childhood programs to programs tailored for adults. 
  • Works together with the Manager of Museum Education to seek and develop meaningful partnerships with organizations/stakeholders with particular emphasis on engaging underserved and/or underrepresented audiences and youth/families. 
  • Works together with the Manager of Museum Education in writing curriculum, preparing lesson plans and delivering virtual and in-person programming for outreach programs, ensuring excellent education opportunities and customer service for community participants and partners. 
  • Stays current on informal education best practices, with an emphasis on nature and science, through professional development. 
  • Assists Manager of Museum Education in developing and maintaining efficient systems for stocking and maintaining program equipment and materials.
  • Assist the evaluation and collection of program data
  • Assists in coordinating education outreach program activities with community stakeholders and with other museum areas including PR/Marketing, Graphics, Visitor Services and Security. 

Work Schedule:  30 hours per week. Normal work schedule is within 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday – Friday but does require flexible schedule necessary to accommodate required evening and weekend public programs work. Schedule varies with program needs and includes hours during times when the University is closed.

Expected Salary:

$17.50 hourly

Minimum Requirements:
  • Associates degree in sciences or education or two years relevant education experience
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and safely lift up to 25 lbs
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Science or related discipline and two years informal education experience  
  • Broad knowledge of natural history topics, and experience with audiences from diverse backgrounds and communities that are underrepresented in museum demographics and in science careers. 
  • Experience creating and editing video content
  • Experience developing and implementing museum education programs 
  • Fully Bilingual (English/Spanish) 
  • Experience with children 3 – 17 years old
    Excellent written and oral communication skills
    Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
    Proficient in Microsoft Office
