Job Description:

Gardening Program Support:

Assist Urban Gardening Program Assistant with educational programs in community gardens, demonstration gardens, and school gardens

Build, maintain, and repair raised beds, greenhouses, and other garden structures

Maintain basic farm and landscape equipment, including tractors, pto-mounted implements, zero-turn lawn mowers, and tillers

Operate basic farm equipment for seed bed preparation, garden management, and community garden assistance

Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools

 

Workplace Safety and Maintenance:

 

Follow, teach, and enforce workplace safety protocols when working with other staff and/or volunteers.

Coordinate maintenance of farm equipment

Install and maintain irrigation systems following state and local code requirements.

Maintain garden grounds as necessary, including watering, mowing, weeding, fertilization, planting, and pesticide applications.

Assist in a variety of training events for Master Gardener Volunteers and the public.

Manage groups of Master Gardener Volunteers who assist in implementation of the Urban Gardening Program.

Safely transport equipment as needed to accomplish required tasks.

Perform physical work outdoors in conditions that may be hot and humid, or cold.

 

Recordkeeping and Reporting:

Obtain and maintain required pesticide license(s).

Maintain accurate records for equipment usage, vehicle mileage and client contacts.

Provide accurate reports of activities on a weekly basis or as requested.

Other Duties as Assigned  

Expected Salary:

$14.50 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

High school diploma required or equivalent and two years of relevant experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Applicants must have reliable transportation a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.

Preferred Qualifications:

Strong knowledge of horticultural principles.

Previous maintenance and grounds work experience.

Ability to interact with faculty, administrators, staff, volunteers and clients in a professional manner

Proficient in documents, spreadsheets, and email, such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook.

Basic arithmetic skills

Able to meet deadlines and work independently by organizing and coordinating work assignments in a cohesive plan

Strong knowledge of gardening and farm equipment usage/maintenance and irrigation systems along with basic knowledge of horticulture

Good interpersonal and communication skills. 

Ability to work in team settings and lead groups of volunteers, many of whom are retired. 

Ability to manage multiple tasks by prioritizing.

Please note: Ability to lift up to 75 pounds.

Experience loading/unloading and operating truck with equipment trailer on public roadways.

This is a Part-time position, for 20 hours per week. To accommodate program needs, the hours are flexible (typically between 8AM-5PM Monday – Friday) - but occasional work on evenings and weekends is required.
