Job Description:

The University of Florida College of Medicine Office of Graduate Education seeks nominations and applications for the position of Assistant Dean for Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program. This is a 0.20 FTE administrative position reporting to the Associate Dean for Graduate Education. This appointment is anticipated to begin by October 2024. The Assistant Dean for the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program will work as a member of the UF College of Medicine Office of Graduate Education leadership team. The incumbent will aid the Associate Dean for Graduate Education in developing and executing a strategic vision to advance the College's goals and academic operations related to the BMS program.

About This Role

The Assistant Dean's areas of responsibility include overseeing the academic aspects, management, and recruitment of the Biomedical Sciences Program Graduate (BMS). The duties include, among others:
 
Academic Oversight and Management
  • Oversee all academic aspects of the BMS program, ensuring high standards of educational quality and academic integrity.
  • Coordinate with the BMS Admissions Committee to develop and implement effective recruitment strategies and admissions processes.
  • Liaise with BMS Concentration Coordinators to ensure cohesive and comprehensive management of the program’s concentrations.

Committee Leadership

  • Chair the BMS Executive Committee, which provides oversight and determines academic policy for the program
  • Lead the BMS Admissions Committee, guiding the evaluation and selection of prospective students.
  • Oversee the BMS Curriculum Committee to ensure the continuous improvement and relevance of the curriculum.
  • Oversee the BMS Graduate Studies Committee to address academic and administrative matters affecting graduate students.

Program Development and Coordination

  • Work closely with foundational science chairs to align the BMS program with the broader educational objectives of the College of Medicine.
  • Foster strong relationships with faculty, staff, and students to enhance the overall educational environment and student experience.
  • Develop and implement new initiatives to support the academic and professional development of BMS students. 

Operational Leadership

  • Provide leadership and direction to staff involved in the BMS program, ensuring efficient and effective program operations.
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the BMS program and other departments within the College of Medicine.
  • Present progress and results to the Associate Dean for Graduate Education and other stakeholders as appropriate.

This is a 0.20 FTE (or equivalent) administrative appointment.

Expected Salary:

Commensurate with education and experience.

Minimum Requirements:

Candidates must hold an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD with at least 60% research effort and with administrative experience in graduate education or student affairs.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Proven track record in scholarship (publications, conference presentations, and/or service to the professional community).
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, prioritization, and time management skills.
