Job Description:

The Martin Research Group in the Department of Chemistry, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL invites application for a Postdoctoral Associate position in the electrochemistry of template-synthesized gold nanotube membranes. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Prof. Charles R. Martin (https://martin.chem.ufl.edu), focusing on coupling ion and electron transport through these membranes. This one-year appointment is renewable based on performance and funding availability.

Successful candidates shall have a strong background in basic and applied electrochemistry and experience in the template-synthesis of gold nanotube membranes. A key issue the postdoctoral researcher will address is whether ion and electron transport can be coupled in such metallic nanotubes. The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for the synthesis and characterization of the nanotube membranes and will investigate how ion and electron coupling is affected by nanotube diameter. Tubes with diameters in the range of 1 to 10 nm will be synthesized and characterized. The postdoctoral researcher will also be expected to mentor undergraduate researchers and assist in the writing and publication of scientific papers.

Our group specializes in the electrochemistry and transport properties of nanotube and nanopore membranes. The nanotubes are prepared by the template-synthesis method pioneered by our group. Research of particular recent interest concerns electronically conductive, primarily gold, nanotubes. The objective is to explore the coupling of ion transport through the solution confined within the nanotubes with electron transport in the conductive gold tube walls. This investigation of ionic Coulomb drag is at the cutting edge of modern nanofluidics research.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Chemistry
Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with template-synthesis of gold nanotube membranes and the investigations of the electrochemical and transport properties of these membranes.

A strong background in electrochemistry, membrane transport, and the template method for preparing nanotubes.
Experience in molecular and materials characterization methods, including, XPS, IR and UV/Visible spectroscopies, fluorescence and electron microscopies, including, TEM, and SEM.
A strong track record of publications would be an asset
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and in a team
Ability to take initiatives, set priorities, time-manage, and resolve problem
