Job Description:

The Department of Physics is seeking an Engineer III. The Engineer must manage a multi-tasking environment, collaborate, and consult, with other engineers and physicists as well as students and postdoctoral researchers, supervise and train junior engineering personnel, and work with vendors for procurement and quality control. Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Oversee Electronics Facility:

  • Lead the group's efforts in supporting and developing hardware, firmware, and software for fast decision-making and data acquisition electronic systems.
  • Support a custom-made high voltage system for the CMS experiment detectors.
  • Develop and implement testing procedures for existing and new equipment to ensure optimal functionality.
  • Contribute to the development of cutting-edge ATCA and other electronics technology for real-time data-taking experiments.
  • Assist in cost analysis and budgeting initiatives, generating comprehensive reports on procedures and results.
  • Proactively develop new data analysis techniques and methodologies to foster innovation within the facility.

Training and Consultation:

  • Provide training and consultation to facility users on specialized equipment and technology.
  • Supervise and train junior engineering personnel and students.
  • Collaborate with researchers and engineers from international collaborations.

Equipment Management:

  • Manage equipment and ensure proper maintenance.
  • Test, troubleshoot, and repair equipment as needed.
  • Assist in developing marketing and strategic plans for increasing facility awareness.

Procurement and Quality Control:

  • Collaborate with vendors for procurement and quality control.

Other duties as assigned.

Expected Salary:

The salary range is $68,000 - $80,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience and the compensation includes a full benefits package.

Minimum Requirements:

A high school diploma or equivalent and eight years of appropriate experience. Appropriate college coursework or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience; or a bachelors degree in an appropriate area and four years of relevant experience; or Masters degree in an appropriate area and two years of relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications: The engineer candidate will be experienced and current, in several, but not necessarily all, of the areas listed below. Initiative and recommendations for improvements in experiment design, equipment, and methodology are also expected.
  • Proficiency in designing, fabricating, testing, and operating multi-layer high-speed PCBs up to ~30 GHz. Experience with design tools such as Cadence Allegro, Altium, and KiCAD is preferred.
  • Proficiency in firmware design for large FPGAs with 100+ multi-gigabit serial optical links. Knowledge of firmware design languages such as Verilog, VHDL, and Vivado is preferred.
  • Familiarity with industry standards including PCIExpress, ATCA, and microTCA is preferred.
  • Familiarity with C/C++ and experience in designing test software and kernel-mode drivers is preferred.
  • Experience in analog design, particularly with DAC/ADC and high-voltage power supplies in the several kV range, is preferred.
  • Familiarity with PCIExpress, ATCA, and microTCA industry standards.
